Default New Member with a Authenticity Question

Good evening all,

I have a quick question for all the baseball experts out there. I recently bought a collection of 10,000 cards or so from a good friend and included in this set of mostly football cards were a few baseball including this interesting Joe Di Maggio card. Its a 1948 Joe Di Maggio set #1 and my big question is if this is an authentic card from 1948. I know nothing about baseball cards but was looking it up online and saw that if it is authenticated by PSA that it can be worth hundreds. Any help would be appreciated!

It looks like it might not be real because of the 2 bottom corners with too even rounding of them. That could be the way its made though. It's hard to tell for sure from the scan.

If it is real it's value is in the $300 range......if it were real it would have to be in much, much better shape to have a lot of value.

I should add, as I reread what I wrote, they did start out with pointed corners, originally of course. Any time I see rounded corners with no fraying, on cards that were supposed to have sharp corners, I am suspect.

Not disagreeing with the pros who've responded, but have you asked your friend about it?

Default Real?

I am not an expert on this set, but I think it may be real. It is difficult to tell from a blurry photo and the card is in a penny sleeve and a top loader. A good scan would help, or, if you could purchase a low grade common from that set, you could use a loop to compare the printing.

I would be in the reprint group as well. The one sign for me is that there are very few of these I've seen without registration issues of some sort. This one is dead nuts on it looks like from the scan.

I could be wrong but similar to Goudey's it's usually a tell if everything lines up perfect and there is no overprinting showing through.

Default Fake

I am confident if it looks like the scan in person it's not real. Printing in background looks fake to me.

Your best bet might be to take it to a local card show (if there are any in your area) and have a few dealers look at it in person. Sometimes that's the only way to be definitive about a card's authenticity. BTW, that's the DiMaggio card from the '49 Leaf set (some refer to it as the '48 Leaf set), and the "1" is there because it's card #1 in the set (each card gets a number).

It should be noted that a lot of dealers aren't that good at telling fakes either. The top 3 grading companies are good (not perfect) at telling fakes. I have explained why some cards are not good only to have dealers not believe me. Oh well, all we can do is try.

I can rescan it without the penny sleeve and case. What exactly do you means by loop for comparison?

Thank you very much! I will probably take this advice and stop in next time one is in Chicago.

I think he means a loupe, i.e. a small magnifying device like jewelers use. They're useful in examining cards for authenticity.

Default loop

Sorry, a loop won't do you much good. A loupe would work much better.
