Default Ebay sale is mind-boggling, it's insane....any thoughts ?

Posted By: Pennsylvania Ted

OK, don't "bust my chops" since this is a 1952 Topps......but, this sale is soooooo absurd that it "screams out" to us
to discuss it.

This card is an everyday Semi-Hi #....that in no-way should have received 30 bids raising it to this crazy $$$$ level.

Can anyone here come up with some sort of "sane" explanation for this sale ? ?

Ted, must be a variation collectors look for. The 2007 SCD guide notes that a "Graded good examples auctioned for $4640.00" in 04,2006.

It's the rare variation...one red star, and one black.

Gee, I better check-out my 1952 Topps "master set" of 555 cards and see if I have this variation ?

If not, I guess I can't call it a "master set" ? ?

In any event....I will be happy to keep it at 555 cards.

Thanks again, guys.

Of course, the guy who made it probably wishes it still wasn't posted. Guess he knew what he was after and really hoped to get a deal.

Yes, the only thing surprising was the low price. It wasn't low because of the economy or prices coming down. It was low because the seller had no clue about what he was selling. No mention of the variation, and "nice filler card" was the best fluff he was able to come up with. The $60 offer in the ask seller question is a classic.

The fact the card is un-graded & that the Seller had 5 other '52s listed w/OUT showing the reverse EXCEPT on this card leaves the chance of an altered star very possible, no matter what he says.

The fact that Pennsylvania Ted, a variation seeking madman, wasn't aware of this variation, also makes it more than possible that the average Ebay seller had no idea what he had. Could it be a dastardly devised plan to rip somebody a new star? Or was the back picture added on this card simply because somebody asked for one?

My question is how many 52 Topps cards have a black star variation?

To a non-back collector I think it is insane. For a back collector it is a gem.

I checked out my 554 card 1952 Topps "master set" and I have this variation.

My priorities have been in pre-war cards for such a long time now, that I have
not looked at my Topps set....so, pardon me if I forgot about this Campos card.

Here is the breakdown of my set......

#1-80....Black backs & Red backs, Page & Sain errors, Boone var. (163 cards)

#81-130....50 cards

#131-190....White and Gray backs (120 cards)

#191-250....60 cards

#251-310....Semi-Hi#s and Campos variation (61 cards)

#311-407....Hi#s and dble-printed cards of Mantle, JRobby & Thomson (100 cards)

<< Marshall, Campos is the only one in the set with the black star variation. >>

Rhett,

I am told that there is one other black star variation in this series but I have yet to verify it in person. Interestingly, there is yet another Campos variation as well. This second variation I have verified.

Ted, congrats on completing the gray back series from 131 to 190. That's a tough run to put together.

I started collecting this very rare series of 60 cards in the 52T set back in 1983.
It has taken me all these years to complete this run. The Billy Martin was one of
the toughest cards in this series Gray Back variations.
