Default Babe Ruth 40 BR bat question.

So I bought this H&B 40 BR bat. Was told that this bat actually isn't a store model bat even the the 40 BR designation is on it. I just got it in hand today and I'll be honest I know nothing about bats.

I must be used to playing softball too much as if I had to swing this damn thing in a game I would probably had a batting average of around zero. I don't know the weight and don't know how to weigh it either.

Any suggestions, help of any kind would be greatly appreciated on all facets of the bat.

Thanks,
Brad

PS - I'm taking to JSA in person for certification.

I will. I live outside Tampa and they will be in Tampa on 9/3 so going to go then. I've owned a few Ruth autos and it looks real to me but with that being said I've been fooled before. My thought is that's a lot of text for a forger to try to do usually they try to make it easy as possible on themselves. But I'll update on that either way when I go. Interested to hear any ideas on the bat itself though.

So thought everyone interested might like an update on this.

Went to JSA on-site in Tampa and will be receiving and full LOA in a couple of weeks in the mail. It was a long wait in the lobby but well worth it and the guys were for JSA were really nice.

Glad it was real as I didn't want to have to deal with the hassle of a return.

Thanks!

Now it's on to figuring out the bat itself. I would love to find out what weight a store model bat came in. My bat is really heavy. I was comparing the Ruth bat to a game used David Ortiz and it made the Ortiz feel like a tooth pick lol.

amazing really, I wonder how many more homers old timers would have hit had they understood a lighter bat generates more bat speed!

apparently, Chipper Jones switched to a heavier bat (36 oz) to slow his bat speed down because he was getting to out front early. so maybe that's why ruth did it too?

well, if you don't have an oz scale you could find a good digital scale, stand on it without the bat, and then stand on it with the bat and subtract the difference.

If you do have an oz scale, zero it out and then put the barrel on there at the balance point. If you need something to hold it down on the end, put that on the scale first, zero the scale, then weigh as normal

Congrats on the bat. I've heard of people taking bats to the post office to get them weighed.

There are a lot of digital kitchen scales out there that can handle plenty of weight, measure in ounces, and cost under $20. Not at all unaffordable.

Default Ummm OK....

So I'm a bit upset right now. I just received in the mail today from JSA what I thought was going to be my LOA as they said it was good at the Tampa show and just had to wait for the LOA to come in aprox 3 weeks. Nope, I got a $200 credit as it came back as inconclusive. So much for taking my photo and saying it was good along with the best piece they've seen this year, etc..

Anyway going to sell it on the bay as I don't want to keep it at this point. I don't know if I can pass the credit along to someone else but I have no use for it after this experience I'm not too high on JSA right now. Very disappointed but wanted you all to know.

Wow! Sorry to hear that bro. These grading companies are so inconsistent. I had a issue similar on a Ruth signed photo. Makes me not even want to buy autographs from either company. Have you tried sending it to psa? (Not like theyre much better) but you never know

Hey thanks Joey! Yeah it was a big kick in the nuts to say the least. Like I said especially after I was told it was good when I was in Tampa during an on-site authentication along with getting my photo taken with it for Facebook. Then to have that letter show up. I even called them and said what the hell? And got the run around of it was split right down the middle, so we error on the side of caution. What gets me is the three authenticators that saw it in person said yes and thats what I left with. Even after double checking, you're sure it's good right? Yes, great piece.

So no I'm done, I'm going to list it in the next few weeks and let it go for what ever it goes for and let the next person send it to PSA or JSA again if they are so inclined. I'll just stick with cards which I know a bit better I guess.

I'm sorry I just saw this. But the words Fellows, Newark, Club, and Sincerely were definitely not penned in Ruth's hand. I didn't even have to get to the actual autograph. So sorry man. Hopefully you can get your money back!

Are you the one selling it on eBay? If so shouldn't the description mention how it failed JSA??

I don't know who is selling it on eBay, but it may not be Brad, it may the person he sold it to.

I tried to point out the initials on the knob in the earlier post . It's jor dimaggio authentication , which when you read about them , none of their authenticated items were real .

I am pretty sure you are right--the person listing it has a different eBay ID than Brad and is in a different location.

Brad, hope you got your money back on this one.

The bat has surfaced again and this time JSA has passed it. So I'm wondering why JSA changed their mind from when the OP gave it to them till when the new owner brought it to JSA

Sorry I haven't been on much lately, but yeah it wasn't me selling it and it wasn't me that got the LOA on it either. I was told it didn't pass after originally being told it did pass. I got a lovely $200 voucher for my time to use JSA again. Doubt that happens and of course I can't transfer it to someone that would like to have it.

Anyway hope the person that got the full LOA 2 months after I was told it was no good gets what they want out of it. Good luck to them.

Same situation happened with me involving a Ruth auto. Its hard to trust either company these days. Theyre both so inconsistent

This item has resurfaced again in Goldin auction..

I Also noticed that someone at one point took off the white writing on the knob. Which Matt Hart said earlier in this post about it referring to J DiMaggio authentication.

I think JSA tends to tell you your items are "looking good" or better on site and then they lower the boom on you through the mail later so they dont have to face you in person. This has happened to me before as well. Im sure when they tried other methods they ended up getting into too many arguments and tales of how it HAD to be real my Dad got it from Ty Cobb himself on a hunting trip yadda yadda yadda..... so to save time they say everything looks awesome. Still a good way to pizz a lot of people off. What a racket!

Yeah I don’t know exactly what happened to the bat after I sent it back to the original owner other than seeing that it passed JSA a month after I was told it failed. I had thought about filing a civil suit and still may to maybe curb this type of behavior.

I can tell you I’m not bidding on it since JSA told me it’s no good then I would say it’s no good.

if you check out the images from the original post... its 2 different bats. The bat that has the number and "JD" on the knob isnt the same bat with the auto. The bat with the auto has a chunk missing on the knob. The bat with the knob that has the number and "JD" is basically fully intact.

They're the same bat but both bats have the piece missing from the knob. Its just a different angle. Compare the autos of the 2 and they have the same marks around the autos
