Default Quality Scanner for graded cards

Posted By: Nick G

I was hoping some of the members of the board might be able to help me.

I wanted to list some cards on ebay etc and the scanner i have now just isnt doing the job. It tends to focus in on the flip (name grade etc) and blur the card as a result.

Can anyone recommend a QUALITY scanner that will pick up the flip and show the card clearly? Price isnt really an issue, i just want something that i know will work

Thanks

Nick

PS- Most of the cards tend to be PSA (with a few SGC )... not sure if that matters but i figured i would mention it

I use an HP All-In-One psc 2200 series, which is great if you need print/scan/copy/fax...

Works well for me on graded/ungraded cards and was in the $100 ballpark if I recall

What you're looking for is a scanner with a CCD (charge coupled device). That's what enables the scanner to see through the plastic and scan the card and flip clearly.

Despite the suggestion above (nothing personal, sorry) I would advise against an all-in-one. Most of them do NOT include a CCD and create poor quality scans for graded cards.

I use a Canon CanoScan 8800F and love it. I paid about $200 for it about a year ago. Here's a sample scan:

No offense taken, Jeff, but the all-in-one may be getting a bad rap -or maybe I just got a decent one.

All scans on the site linked above were taken with the All-In-One - I think the quality is just fine. I do use the "DeScreen" option in the HP Scanning software - it makes a significant difference in reducing the typical moire patterns. I have never had a problem with its ability to focus through slabs.

I'm not looking to start a debate here, but I have to agree with Mike about the all-in-ones. I bought mine because it can standalone photocopy and fax, but the scanning is quite good as well. Of course, it's also a Hewlett Packard PSC 2200 series (2210 model), so perhaps it's just this line from HP?

Regards,

Richard.

My HP all-in-one and I have a very poor relationship. The scan function is on sabbatical about 65% of the time.

Hey Mike the scans on your site obviously look fantastic. I certainly wouldn't try to deny that.

I have an HP PSC 1610 all-in-one and the graded card scans look pretty crappy. I've noticed that to be the case with many similar models.
As your scans indicate, you can find all-in-ones that produce quality scans. I guess I would be careful, just as I would be careful of buying a scanner that costs less than $75-100.

Here's my same Joss card scanned with the HP:

Hey Jeff,

Definitely see what you mean - big difference between your two scans. For what its worth, my scanner is the same as Richard's - the PSC 2210.

Haven't checked the product docs to see if there is a fundamental technology difference between the 22xx and 16xx product lines but the scans certainly have a lot to say!

I think your price-point recommendation is the key. I don't remember what I paid, but it was likely in the $100-150 range, not the $75-100.

Thanks!

I had this same discussion a couple months ago with some fellow collectors, and three of us decided on the Canon CanoScan 4400F. It has CCD and is under $100. All of us that have it love it.

Here is a link from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-CanoScan-4400F-Scanner-1306B002/dp/B000HDWZLC/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-9260187-5663242?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1217735426&sr=8-1

It's actually $85, and if you use the Super Saver Shipping, shipping is free. When I did it, I got the scanner 2 days after I ordered it.

Here are some sample scans of SGC and PSA slabs:

...and really dislike my HP two-in-one. I bought the cheapest Cannon available at CompUSA about 5 years ago -- it was $50.00.

But I think as important as the scanner is the image-processing software you use to make the card look as life-like as possible. I use Google's free Picassa software to accomplish this.

I was the one who asked about the scanner about 3 month ago. I went with the Canon 4400f and I love it. Buy it and you won't be dissapointed!

Here is a scan of one of my CJ with my Canon 4400f.

Always looking for 1915 Cracker Jack PSA 7's & 8's.
