The reserve on this was $1200 which is what I paid. How much $$ do ya'll think this seller left on the table, or didn't leave on the table, given these attributes-

1.0 feedback seller
2.ungraded
3.reserve

I would say it will grade a very nice 40......
(he was local and we met in a large restaurant parking lot to exchange today)

If your assessment is correct (SGC 40) and the card is in fact unaltered, you paid toward the higher end of the current market value. Of course, the next logical question is ... what direction is the market heading on this card.

I would think it was a fair deal for both. It does look like a 30 to me, but it could go either way. Nice pickup.

if it grades SGC 40, I think it was a fair price.

PSA 3 went for $1327 reecntly.

Leon, what else was in her husband's childhood collection? I'm certain you asked. ( I would have.)

At least I got a decent deal...I was thinking I might trade it in on the one I already have....but who knows. As for the other stuff....There wasn't any more old vintage. This gentleman (35-40yrs old) mainly collected 1970-1980's TOPPS. He said he traded a Rose rookie for this several years ago.....The few other cards he brought to show me were in really nice shape. I directed him to Beckett for local grading. I would guess the 20 cards I saw were in nrmt-mt shape....

I emailed her at auction start and asked her to open and allow PP account. When I saw the next day that it was done, I knew it was good.

One of my favorite poses (and Sox uniform). I would have taken the risk and traded a dozen Rose rookies. Very, very nice.

There seems to be a contradiction.

- the seller's description included: "From my husband's childhood collection."

- Leon mentioned the transaction he had was with a man.

I guess there could be a different agent in the transaction than the ebay lister. I guess it is also possible that having a husband doesn't necessarily mean the seller is a woman.

Or is the answer that the seller made that statement to draw in buyers looking to make a financial killing off of a supposed unknowledgeable woman?

I like the part where local dealers said it was in NM condition.

There were no lies, no deception, no anything. This is cut and pasted from the auction:

From my husband's childhood collection. Near mint Cy Young card (American Caramel Company). According to local dealers, this is NM condition. Another Cy Young card (same year and quality) recently featured on Sotheby's website for $1,700 - $2,500 in value. Hope you like it!

and that's exactly what it was. This gentlemans wife put this on ebay for him. He collected 70's-80's TOPPS as a kid. He traded the Rose rookie for this card a long time ago. That's the story...btw, he seemed like a very nice, regular ole guy.....hope this doesn't hurt the murder mystery....

also, when they said nrmt there could have been someone that told them that...he really only collected these as a kid....I have no reason not to believe him...

edited for grammar

I see....so the seller was listing it for her husband who is still alive? I see so many ebay listings that say their husband died and they are selling his old cards, etc. etc. my mistake.

he didnt say that he pulled it out of a caramel, obviously he found it while he had other stuff to put toward it, he doesnt have to be on board to not have had a transaction years ago. This stuff DID happen then to ,The e90-1 didnt graduate in the 70's.

A PSA 4 sold yesterday for $1600 w/o BP in the Hunt auction, if I am not mistaken. Yours may be nicer, though hard to tell from scan. Nice card.

Nice card but is the background orange like the scan? Mine is a deep scarlet red color.

I saw that card on ebay too. I think it was a good buy. That Young is my favourite Cy Young card next to the e94 and e93

Good card -- Good price. The only "red flag" that bothered me during the auction was the Reserve, but that's because I don't like Reserve auctions.

Hey Tbob,
Quit playing hard to get . I wrote you 2 apologetic emails about offending you before.....Regardless, we are glad to have you back posting on the board. The background is dark red not orange. My tbought is that the seller did leave $400-$600 on the table. I believe this card in a nice 40 or really high end 30 holder, would go for $1500-$1900...depending on the day. I might not have bid on it either had the seller not been local. I do think there were several red flags....as stated in my first post. I guess I might have been in the minority though, which is not uncommon lately...best regards

In Mikes post, he mentions - "Logical question is, where is the market headed on this card".
Have you seen the ending prices on mid grade (vg, vg/ex) Hofer's and short prints from this set lately. To say the set is hot right now would be an understatement.
Take it from a guy who is currently putting the set together in 4's and 5's, (some 3's). Its very very tough. My opinion is, what once was said to be an easy set to complete, is now extremely difficult.
I put this set at the top of my list as having the most potential in growth still to come.
There's just not a whole lot of nice examples of some of the Hofer's and short prints around from this set to cover the demand. Although mentioned in another recent post where we speak of the population reports not being accurate on some of the other sets, take a look sometime at Sgc's and Psa's pop report on this set. 4's, 5's, and 6's combined are pretty low. Take into consideration crossover's that surely have taken place on some and you still have just handfuls available in vg/ex and above on many cards from the set. Leon, I think you did okay on the Young.
Although its not a real toughie from the set, it still gets plenty of attention when it pops up for sale. It went for about where market currently is on the card.

Tony Andrea
