Default Marty O'Toole Pittsburg(h) Pirates

Anybody familar with him? Have a card of his?

Born in Mass. (my error he was born in PA, grew up in Mass.) Played for Cincinnati in 1908, then for the Pirates from 1910-1914 and finished with the NY Giants also in 1914.

He was baseball's highest paid pitcher in 1911 (the original check is at the HOF).....yet turned out being a bust.

Was he baseball's first bust?

Two versions of his m113.

The Boston caption was released in March 1912.

Not sure when it was reprinted with the NY caption.

There were other busts before O'Toole. Joseph Borden (aka Josephus) of the 1876 Boston NL team comes to mind. He finished his hefty contract as the team's groundskeeper. Though born in PA, O'Toole grew up in Framingham MA in a large family including several brothers who also played professional baseball.

Thanks, guys. Here is the back. I put together a low/mid-grade set of the D304s about 15 years ago. Liked the cartooney style. The O'Toole is the only Martens in the bunch
