Default D304 - I hate to ask....

Posted By: Rick Swaine

Now you guys have got me worried! I'm not a D304 collector, but I've proudly displayed this card in my type collection for many years. After following this thread I've already reconciled to the probability that it's not authentic .... but I'd sure like to hear different.

Rick,

The card is real and this is the first time I've seen a Merkle with a Fleischmann Bakery back.

Of course we figure all players to exist with the back (since it says "there are 25 subjects in this set") but I've personally never documented the Merkle from a collector until now.

Thanks and nice card.

Rob

Thanks so much for the advice on my D304 Merkle. I picked it up about 12 or 15 years ago through a SCD listing (wish I could remember the seller - I know it was an established dealer). I bought it sight unseen and remember being pleasantly surprised when the condition was much better than I bargained for. (How often does that happen?!)

Thanks again for sharing your expertise.

fakes/reprints are easy to spot with a 10x loupe...you'll see pixelation...especially in the white border and black border line, which should be solid white and solid black. The reprints are also on very thin stock and have a totally black ink on the back, whereas (or is it whilst?) the originals were printed with a very dark green ink on the back.

edited to add: yours looks AOK to me and a nice example...wanna swap for a Brunners back in a SGC slab just to be sure happy.gif
