Default Mastro auction 2/14 - 2/24 ... question

Posted By: Hal Lewis

I read somewhere (PSA website?) that the upcoming Mastro Collector's Classic aution in February would START on the internet for bidding on 2/14.

Normally they put up the web site for a preview for a few days BEFORE the bidding actually starts so that everyone has time to "shop"...

so does ANYONE know when the "catalog" will be up and running on the internet for us to review???

Hal,

There will be a 1924 Diaz Ruffing Rookie in the auction, which should be right up your alley.

I was chewing them out last auction for charging $75 for catalogues to regular auctions--it's certainly their right (if a little tackey). I mistakenly thought you had to have bid in one of the last 7 to BID without paying $75...

Oh well, since bidding is all on the internet, I don't mind looking there.

Diaz is a 1924 Cuban Tobacco Set. The set is from the same company as the Tomas Gutierrez cards that John mentioned, but it is a distinctive set, featuring only major leaguers. The Diaz set is extremely rare, and contains the rookie card of Red Ruffing. The one in the Mastro Auction is from my collection, and it is the only one that I have ever seen. Attached is a lousy scan of the card. I'm sure the scan in the Mastro catalogue will be much clearer.

Here is another scan of a Diaz (Tomas Gutierrez) card, although not a HOF "rookie", it is in a little nicer shape. Extremely tough in any condition, Lipset talks briefly about them in his encyclopedia, not many were known then however. Crazy thing about this set is that the "book value" has remained largely unchanged for nearly 2 decades.

He did it so I could extort you on it. If I don't run you up you can leave one little ole N167 HOF for me in coming auctions? .....I really need Andy's card all of these cards will probably surpass my puny budget anyway.....later.

Hal,

The reason that I consigned it rather than offering it to you is that I really have no idea of the value. These cards are extremely rare, and the price guides are not accurate. Rather than arbitrarily coming up with a number, I thought the most fair thing to do would be to let the market dictate the value.

Here's another one. The only one that I've ever actually seen in person. An uncommon card, but also a low demand set. I won this in a Ron Oser auction. There were only 2 bidders.

There are Diaz cards of Johnson, Alexander, Pennock, Rixey, Grimes and Hoyt. Anybody got one?

John:

TIK sent me real-sized color copies of the "cabinet/proofs" from that set...

and many of them are so faded that they are not too pleasing.

You will need to find someone else to partner up with on that set!

Well then yes i will go for this one Hal,seeing as a psa6 of this card went for 11k,as long as a fair one goes for around half that then ill win it and then try to trade it to TIK for the cabinet

I hope we are not heading for another "before" and "after" as with the Keeler cabinet in Mastro's last auction. I hope all that is "clearer" is the scan, or if work is done, it is disclosed.

Wow, I've become famous through my incessant whining. Thank you very much for the tip about the McPhee. I wasn't aware of it.

Hal, you really don't want that Ruffing. It's from Cuba. For that reason, it probably qualifies as contraband, and the government will confiscate it from you. Besides, I want it.

This auction is my want list. Aside from the McPhee, there's a poor condition N172 Delahanty, Andy's Red Ruffing, an E94 Young, a Leaf Paige. Geez. I could spend a full year's budget on this one auction, buying only things I've specifically asked for on this board.

1.) Many of the cards that you guys are mentioning are mine, so bid high! No collusion allowed.

2.) The scan of the Ruffing is lousy because my scanner sucked. It is now broken. Mastro took a much better scan. The card is in poor condition. I can't imagine that anyone is thinking it was restored. Look at it again.

I have now seen the scan of the Ruffing and am glad to see it is indeed the same card you consigned in the same condition. I certainly did not intend to suggest otherwise, was just expressing hope prior to having seen the Mastro scan (I did not know it was already available online). I also hope the same is true for all the other lots in the auction, or that where any work has been done it is disclosed.

Hal, the Mastro price for Andy's Ruffing is too rich for my blood. It's all yours, if you can fight off the other folks bidding on it. I will be very happy with my 1925 Exhibit Ruffing.

Andy, what a fool I am. I can't remember what you offered that card to me for a year ago, but it was sure less than what you will get now. Shame on you for not offering it to me again before consigning it to someone who will actually get you every penny possible for the card.
