If you ever get a chance to speak to some of our remaining veterans, please do yourself a favor and do it. They are amazing.

While not a veteran of Pearl Harbor, a local gentleman just recently told his story of surviving an attack in the Pacific in which he was one of maybe 12 survivors from his ship of over 200. He floated in the Pacific for 2 days holding onto a barrel before being rescued. His family wasn't even aware of this until before Christmas of 2008. It is still difficult for him to talk about.

He is one of many heroes of that era and I am proud to call him a friend.

Great story, Richard. I wonder if that gentleman was on the Sammuel B. Roberts.

I never asked him the ship's name, there is a chance I could see him tomorrow and if so, I'll ask him.

He was on the LST 884 according to today's visit. The ship didn't have a more common name. I haven't had a chance to research it much as yet but parts of his story matche up and others don't seem to.... I'm not questioning him on it though, he is sincere in what he says and still has his wits with him.
