Default Not to bash PSA but........

Has anyone noticed n172 cards in PSA holders that appear to be skinned? I have seen this quite abit in the past and caution folks on buying n172 cards in psa holders if the backs look funky. You can clearly tell from the back of the card. Maybe graded early in the grading process? Just wanted to see if anyone else noticed this.

I think I've seen a PSA graded Dorgan that had an suspicious looking back. It was smooth and shiny if I remember correctly. It wasn't mine though

Shiny is a good sign. Skinned N172s don't have that original luster any more.

I've never seen a skinned N172 in a PSA holder. Got a pic of one?

I'm pretty sure the only legitimate company that will encapsulate skinned OJ's is Becket. I don't think PSA will even give an A to a skinned OJ.

Toby - nice to see you posting in the forum - do you have a scan of what you are referring to?

Default n172

Ken, doing well. Hope we can catch up at the national. I do not have scans. The backs should be smooth looking. Skinned backs have a darker rough surface look to them. I was burned on a harry wright and just wanted folks to be aware. Ask for back scans if you are paying decent money for a psa graded old judge. Sgc does not make this mistake

Toby, have you contacted PSA about it? I'm guessing they'd be mighty embarrassed about having a skinned OJ with a numerical graded holder out there.

There's a PSA graded N172 Billy Sunday out there that has a numerical grade and the bottom is trimmed off.

It's always good to know that we can rely on the experts to use their knowledge and provide the hobby with a great service.

I can already hear it, "that's only one OJ they messed up on". In my book, if you're going to be providing a service then the quality control better be in place to ensure that obviously trimmed cards are not provided numerical grades. I guess that boils down to "obvious to who?"
