Default Recent RMY Auction - 1929 Rogers Hornsby photo

I saw in the recent RMY Auction a Rogers Hornsby photo: https://rmyauctions.com/bids/bidplace?itemid=36671 I right away noticed it was very simular to mine. Mine has the same Associated Press Photo stamp and is also missing the tag. Both have hand written Roger Hornsby, but the one I have has Chicago Cubs added, however was missing the date stamp. It is obvious that both photos were taken during the same game and most likely moments apart (I like mine better ;o) ). I knew that the stadium was Wrigley Field (LA), but was unsure as to when. Now that I see the date stamp of MAR9 1929, I now know when. Looks like, by the socks, they are playing Brooklyn (http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.o...ar&increment=9). My question is, does anyone know how to find pre-season schedules/scores from back then online, going to the LA library is not an option for me.

Your best bet might be getting a free 7-day trial to Newspapers.com and that would allow you to search for a boxscore/game info. Good luck!

The Library of Congress has a free database of scanned newspapers (I don't think it is as extensive as newspapers.com).

https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/

I found a few mentions in a quick search of 3/10-3/11 and Cubs - it looks like Rogers had a good two-game series vs. the Los Angeles Angels:

You might have more luck if you spend a little more time. I suggest looking at the LA and Chicago papers for those dates, without a keyword, and looking at the sports sections. Sometimes the search feature doesn't pick up all of the words as it is searching an image.

Default Spring Training on Catalina Island

I believe the first one is correct. The game was played at Wrigley Field in LA, which is where the first article stated the game was at. The second article states Avalon, California (Catalina Island), where the Cubs had Spring Training until the War.

Interesting video on Spring Training on Catalina Island 1939 (no sound).

Field is now the location of the Police and Fire Departments of Avalon.
Map where field was right above golf course.

Thanks Bob, I notice you seem to be the man on difficult questions.
