Default Accepting Paypal

Posted By: Lee Behrens

I have recently noticed a trend alot of seller offering to accept Paypal, but only accepting Paypal funds. I personally feel that defeats most of the purpose for having Paypal, which is to accept or make credit card payments. I know there is a fee tied to being able to use CCs with Paypal, but you still need to transfer funds into your account if you have no money available (which is most of the time for me), this transfer takes 3-4 business days.

This may be a personal peeve, but I don't also have funds available at the time of the auction and need to use a credit card to make payment (for some reason I don't believe I am the only one in this situation).

I would just like the people out there that currently accept Paypal only from funds to seriously consider upgrading. I know there is a fee, but did you ever think about how many bids you are missing because you do not accept credit cards. I personally believe it makes up for the fees.

Know that I got that off my chest I can thank the people that only accept funds for doing it because it narrows my options on auctions I want to bid on.

I recently notified a seller of this fact and he graciously told me that I could make payments if I won his auctions (he is a board member). I preceeded to bid over $800 in his auctions. I did not win any, but one auction in particular I bid over $50 higher than the next underbidder (BROOKS I BELIEVE YOU KNOW WHICH CARD THAT WAS, I WAS REALLY HOPING TO WIN).

I feel like David with this long post, but I will make every effort not to make a follow up post right behind this one.

I've noticed that more and more as well but my suspicious nature tells me it's due more to the ability of the sender to get their money back from credit card companies is much easier than trying to do the same from a bank.

Could be wrong.

Pete brought up a point I forgot about is that I have a credit card that pays me 1% back, and I have noticed a growing trend toward CC companies offering cards that have rebates.

As a sometimes seller, I have always accepted credit card payments through PayPal and eaten the charges because, like Lee, I believe that the increase in number of bids compensates for the fees you pay. That may be naive but I don't think so. A lot of bidders don't have the available funds to pay for a card but can put the total on their credit card and pay it off. One thing I try to do as a buyer (can't always do it, but try) is to pay for cards I buy on eBay from people I know with funds from my bank account so as to keep them from having to pay the fees.

If you have a premier or business account, then paying PayPal funds will not save you the fee.

I am like Tbob in taht I accept PayPal in any form because I am sure that people will bid higher knowing they can use their card rather then be limited by cash on hand. Also, if you get PayPal's debit card, you get back 1.5% when you get the card. My merchant fee is 2.2%, so using the card can elminate a large protion of the fees.
