Default Help me justify buying more cards !

Posted By: Chuck

I'm fortunate to be able to "afford" more cards than I buy. Just can't see spending that kind of money on cards..... and you can believe my better half feels the same way !! Additionally, I have a decent stock of cards to trade/sell (although I can't get motivated to do the latter unfortunately).

One way I've hit on to build up a budget...... 0%/no fee credit card balance transfers I can put into a CD for a year.

In addition, I buy myself cards for Christmas, Fathers Day, Birthday, etc and give to the family to give me en lieu of other gifts. Christmas is coming....anybody have a Poor/Fair T206 Cobb??

On the flipside, as I drive down the freeway inching above 75 mph I tell myself that if I get a ticket, the fine comes out of my budget.

Any other ideas??

First you have to set your financial priorities. Mine are:

1. T206's
2. Pay monthly bills
3. 33 Goudeys
4. Gas for the car and food
5. 1914 and 15 CJ's
6. Credit card payments
7. T205's
8. 1949 Leaf
9. Other Vintage, OJ's, etc.
10. Home repairs, savings, retirement.

Seriously, I don't hunt or fish or own guns or play golf or smoke and I rarely drink. My only vice is cards, so why not spend some money on something that I enjoy? I can spend a couple of thousand bucks on a vacation and have a great time, but when the vacation is over, I have some good memories, but the money is gone. When I spend the money on cards I have the cards until I decide to sell them, and if I didn't go crazy and overpay for the cards, I can usually get my purchase price back.

Print this and tape it to your refrigerator so your wife can read it.

Rick

If you don't enjoy collecting then don't. I am not a huge fan or collecting ( I am more of the buy non graded sell graded = profit kind of kid) but I do enjoy hunting for cheap 1960 topps. Whatever floats your boat go with it.

Chuck,

I think that what you posit is probably fairly typical of "responsible adults" when it comes to card collecting. You try to inject good sense into the equation of potential card purchases. As such, let me propose Card Collector's Man Law #1:

"Good sense has no role to play in vintage baseball card collecting!"

Life is so much better when one can continue to live at least a small part of it as a child. And from what you say, you have the financial means to do so.

The ultimate pleasure is having no need to justify it.

Ken

ROFLMAO! Would it help if I told you how uncertain the card mnarket is? That they're just little pieces of cardboard? That you should invest in someting solid?

DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH! You mean, there's actually something someone could say that would STOP you from buying more cards?

You poor, sick guy...

(editerd to correct every conceivable mistake possible)
