Maybe people are finally tired of the inanity of a thread about whether they received a catalog yet.

I went to the local mail distribution center and walked around in a frenzy sniffing piles of boxes. No luck.

Mine arrived today, and....

1. The mailman almost broke his back delivering it
2. It smells really great
3. It’s sooooooo thick
4. It’s more like a phone book than a Catalog
5. There are so many nice cards this time
6. I placed my opening bids, and am already outbid on every lot
7. I will be happy just to win one item

There... I think that covers it, but probably forgot something important. Feel free to add anything I’ve missed.

A true story from tonight...

I actually talked my wife into smelling the Catalog, fresh out of the box. At one point, we were even smelling it together. It was a true bonding experience, I thought...

But then she pushed it into my face, and said “You look at your nerd porn - I’m watching Grey’s Anatomy”.

There is no way I could even get my wife to do that. While we were smelling it, she would be attempting to disembowl me. I'm not in. IMO, its best not to share everything. I won't lie if asked directly, but there's a reason I have stuff sent to my office.

Glad there are 15 days to go. I placed all my opening bids; and accidentally opened the "my bids" page (I try to never look until there are a few days left) - and saw the "Currently winning" total - need some of you fellas to get to bidding; or that last comment about a wife disemboweling one of us will surely occur.

That thing has to cost a ton of money to produce - I have never won an REA auction yet I continue to receive - go figure

I got mine today... I am perusing it at the airport as we speak and I can’t help but notice it looks like they had to compress most of the images to fit them on a page and as a result all of the cards look like butter creams to me!!!

Mine arrived yesterday...once again, very PRETTY!

I just can't get excited over the catalogs anymore...

Once you've seen one $100K starting bid, you've seen them all.

- and I've been spoiled by what has come before...

- and my few remaining white whales did not show up...

...and no Honus this time.

Haha....

Great Seinfeld episode. Tough to improve upon a young (and unaltered) Teri Hatcher. But just like so many cards as they mature, I think the Doctors have gotten to her!

I was looking through mine and my wife who has COPD made me move into my room as the ink smell was giving her lung issues.

My wife said the catalog must be put out into the garage to air out before it will be allowed in the house.

That's because you increase the bids of all the bidders who do win! They need you as much as the winners.

Default REA Catalog

I received my catalog over the weekend. I had already submitted a handful of bids online. I've been drooling over the catalog ever since it rolled in. I have put sticky notes on a lot of items and have submitted additional bids, but, in every case I have been outbid. I fully though my bids could stand (even with the 20% buyer premium) in most cases. At this point I have 0 winning bids out of 29 tries.

I will revisit the bidding before the cut off time, which I believe is 6pm, and determine if I can venture any more money. I am probably going to give up on the early stuff, but do like some of the autographed items as well as the Non-sports stuff in the back of the book.

Good luck to everyone bidding.

From my perspective, this is one of the slowest REA auctions ever, at least to this point. Eleven of the twenty nine lots I consigned have no bids. Of the lots I have bid on, most have not moved in days. Perhaps that will change after Heritage and Leland’s end.

I think this is an almost certainty. Crazy busy auction week(s) with loaded auctions. But always makes me feel better when my consignments have at least 2 bids headed into extended bidding. Always hoping for bidding wars! Except for the things I want of course!

I was looking at an item in Heritage and was a low under bidder. Totally forgot about it. Last time I looked it was like 4K. Was shocked this am to see it sold for near 20k with the juice. I think bidding habits have changed a great deal. People don’t run things up and hold their powder. Seems like 75% of bidding on high end items now comes last 36 hours.

And often 50% or more in last hour. Watch it happen Sunday night! Insane frenzy right before close.

It makes complete sense actually. They intentionally start these items with very low minimum bids, in order to attract as many bidders as possible. The more people with "skin in the game, the more spirited the bidding is likely to be.

The only reason to check your existing bids prior to the final day is to see how many people you are likely to be up against. But it has little bearing on where the item will land, or whether the winning bidder of the moment has any chance of his bid holding up. It's been the same for many years now, and is perplexing how many people still seem to be surprised by the certainty of late bidding. It is more an inevitability than an anomaly.

Is it just me or does this PSA7 Thorpe have a spot of paper loss between the “O” and “R” in “SPORT” on the front?

I can't answer your question, but I bet Brian at REA would if you asked them to take a closer look at the card and provide a definitive answer. If you've never contacted REA, I can say they are very quick to answer questions, either by phone or email.

Jay, I think you are right. But that’s one pretty card.

Last REA auction, I got shut out bc I was nervous about dropping multiple (7+) max bids on expensive cards for fear all my max bids would hold and I would be “stuck” spending much more than I expected. I am not sure what I will do this time. All I can tell you is that while I LOVE REA (great company, great auctions, great people), I HATE that every single lot in the auction closes at the same time.
