Default Rare Honus Wagner cards

Probably we've done this one already, but for old times' sake and for the newer collectors, let's put together a list of rare Honus Wagner cards. Let's say anything with at least 1 confirmed copy but with fewer than 50 examples so no one tries to list you know what.

I'll start.

1910 E98. Technically over 50 if you add all 4 colors together but broken out there are less than 50 graded of each color between the two companies, there are some that aren't labeled with a color so there may be more than 50 reds but not by much.

IMO, only the most common Wagners would not fit the pop of less than 50. The T206 is actually quite plentiful compared to most Wagners. For truly rare Wagners I would say it should be 10 or less. This is one of my favorites.

Not a card but very proud to own. JF Hillerich & Son advertising envelope mailed to Wagner himself just after signing an endorsement deal with the bat maker. I took it down to Hillerich & Bradsby and they didn’t know one existed.

I'm sure many frown on these, but hey unless the person ripped the page out and send it to them, how else would the publisher know which team to send? I'm pretty sure there are less than 40 copies of the W601 and or the 1906 Sporting Life NL pocket schedule.

Some great tough Wags shown. Here is a link to a thread I started 10 years ago which had plenty of input from collectors about this subject (over multiple years):

https://net54baseball.com/showthread...ghlight=wagner

And for those who get a little squeamish at the thought of your eyes glazing over a longer thread, below is the most updated listing seen within the thread that lists the various perceived levels of availability of Honus cards (for the most part the list consists of what I consider cards, as I don't have a good feel on items outside of normal card range). Feel free to suggest updates...I see some that I might consider shifting.

Definitely more Common:

1913 Barker Game
1909/11 Colgans E254
1915 Cracker Jack
1909/11 E90-1 batting and throwing
1910 E91-C
1909 E92 Dockman batting and fielding
1910 E93
1909 E95
1910 E98
1906 Fan Craze NL
1910/11 M116 blue
1910/11 M116 pastel
1913 National Game
1914 Polo Grounds Game

Around the same as the T206 Wagner:

1914 Cracker Jack
D322 Tip-top
E90-2
E94
E102 batting
M101-4 Sporting News and blank backs

Probably less the the T206 Wagner:

D304 General Baking and Brunner's backs
E101 batting and fielding poses
E103
E135 Collins McCarthy and blank backs

Definitely less than the T206:

All Star Baseball
Baseball Bats
D304 all backs besides General Baking and Brunner's
D381 Fleischman/Ferguson Bakery
E92 Crofts Candy both poses
E92 Crofts Cocoa both poses
E92 Nadja both poses
E102 fielding
E104-2
E105 Mello-Mint
E106 American Caramel both poses
E107
E125 American Caramel both poses
E135 all associated backs except Collins McCarthy and blank
E270 Tin Tops
E271 Darby Chocolates
E286 Ju-Ju Drums
E300 Plows Candy
J + K
M101-4 (all backs except for Sporting News and Blank)
M101-5 (all backs)
M110
M131 Baltimore Newsboy
Orange Border batting and portrait
Reccius Icky Bob
T5
T216 Kotton, Mino and Virginia Extra (all variations)
Texas Tommy type 1 and 2
Voskamps
W555
W600 both
W-Unc 1912
Postcards: Rose Co, American League Pub, Novelty Cutlery, Vignette

Heck if I know:

BF2 Pennants
M101-2
M101-2 w/Cobb

The National Copper Plate and the Sporting News M101-1 rookie issues are among the rarest.

It seem like every year there is a thread about rare Honus Wagner cards compared to his T206 but most if not all of them are rare because all the cards in that particular set have a low population. Between PSA and SGC there are 402,036 graded T206's, 54 of those are Honus Wagner's that's 0.0134 percent and that's not even taking into account the ungraded cards.

You need to add the M101-1’s to the list. Maybe 3-15 of each around?

And for those who get a little squeamish at the thought of your eyes glazing over a longer thread, below is the most updated listing seen within the thread that lists the various perceived levels of availability of Honus cards (for the most part the list consists of what I consider cards, as I don't have a good feel on items outside of normal card range). Feel free to suggest updates...I see some that I might consider shifting.

Definitely more Common:

1913 Barker Game
1909/11 Colgans E254
1915 Cracker Jack
1909/11 E90-1 batting and throwing
1910 E91-C
1909 E92 Dockman batting and fielding
1910 E93
1909 E95
1910 E98
1906 Fan Craze NL
1910/11 M116 blue
1910/11 M116 pastel
1913 National Game
1914 Polo Grounds Game

Around the same as the T206 Wagner:

1914 Cracker Jack
D322 Tip-top
E90-2
E94
E102 batting
M101-4 Sporting News and blank backs

Probably less the the T206 Wagner:

D304 General Baking and Brunner's backs
E101 batting and fielding poses
E103
E135 Collins McCarthy and blank backs

Definitely less than the T206:

All Star Baseball
Baseball Bats
D304 all backs besides General Baking and Brunner's
D381 Fleischman/Ferguson Bakery
E92 Crofts Candy both poses
E92 Crofts Cocoa both poses
E92 Nadja both poses
E102 fielding
E104-2
E105 Mello-Mint
E106 American Caramel both poses
E107
E125 American Caramel both poses
E135 all associated backs except Collins McCarthy and blank
E270 Tin Tops
E271 Darby Chocolates
E286 Ju-Ju Drums
E300 Plows Candy
J + K
M101-4 (all backs except for Sporting News and Blank)
M101-5 (all backs)
M110
M131 Baltimore Newsboy
Orange Border batting and portrait
Reccius Icky Bob
T5
T216 Kotton, Mino and Virginia Extra (all variations)
Texas Tommy type 1 and 2
Voskamps
W555
W600 both
W-Unc 1912
Postcards: Rose Co, American League Pub, Novelty Cutlery, Vignette

Heck if I know:

BF2 Pennants
M101-2
M101-2 w/Cobb

Pete, That E-Unc is my favorite Wagner card out there. Love that one. I hope to one day be able to own one. Thanks for sharing it.

The bigger size supplement type issues are definitely not one of my strong points when it comes to knowledge. I will add the M101-1 and National Copper Plate to the 'Definitely Less Than T206' column...and should I add the M101-2 as well? It was/is in my 'Heck if I Know' category.

Brian
