As far as bats are concerned I have two favorites... Gavvy Cravath (cracked, but in nice shape for being over 80 years old) and Don Reynolds... long story...

edited to add, picking a favorite card would be tough...

While I will never sell my childhood 71 and 72 Topps sets, the prized card is my collection is my m101-5 Thorpe. I also have a bunch of letters from Negro League players will never go anywhere. My favorite of these is the letter I got from Mahlon Duckett.

I like to sit outside, drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home, I would be arrested. So, I go to baseball games and fit right in.

as much as i love the 206's, i have to admit that my autographed baseball
from Hank Aaron that says Best Wishes to Barry Arnold(along with his signature) is my fav.
He gave it to me in the days before i was a prof. when i taught his daughter
at a prep school.
Quite the gentleman---and ethical all the way!
By the way, his daughter made an A---and deserved it!

For me it's my growing 1933 Goudey set. It's not in high grade or anything, but I love the artwork and eye appeal of this issue. Only 76 aways, although 3 of them are still Babe Ruth!

My dad gave me both of these when I was a kid. Years after selling off most of my collection, these were the two I really regretted. I was thrilled to be able to pick up both of these in the last few years.

My favorite baseball posession is my granfather's bat that he used playing semi-pro ball in Vermillion MN, in the 20's. It is a Rogers Hornsby signature model. It's cracked, been taped, and not in the greatest shape but it was the one thing he gave me before he died when we were cleaning out his garage.

It resides in our bedroom as not only a memento, but also a peace-maker just in case someone decides to break in. The thing weighs a ton and would do some real damage.

Great topic!

Bill

Please disregard my previous post, on further reflection, my most prized baseball related posession is this 1948 Zenith Radio that set on night stand by my grandfathers bed. The radio he used to listen to every Houston Buff, Colt 45 & Astros game until he died in 1974.

I guess it's a 1940's bakelite deco style radio, it's the same age as me by the way. It maybe a stretch but I can still hear Gene Elston & Lowell Pass voice's coming out of it. By the way, Gene Elston won the Ford C. Frick award this year which I think puts him in the Hall of Fame as a broadcaster.

My favorite baseball item is an 1890s ring bat handmade by a prisoner
serving a life sentence. He signed and dated it in ink, refering to himself
as a 'Lifer' and the barrell has the original state prison sticker.

Without a doubt it would be the letter written on Hollywood Stars stationary dated November 5, 1955 from Bobby Bragan to Dale Long talking about how he was looking forward to coaching the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1956. Dale Long gave this to me and added his own note about how the letter was a response to one he had sent Bragan. The content is so interesting !!

Joe,
That's one of the coolest pieces I have ever seen. I'm sure it looks unbelievable on your wall! I wish that top right image was the one they would have used for Home Run Baker's Turkey Red card, as it looks much better than the one they settled on.

I won't bore everyone with my top two picks which are both cards my mother and father gave me and I've posted those a million times I'll go with my third most prized item....A Stall & Dean James Delahanty model bat because as far as I know it's the only one known. My brother found all of these bats at a garage sale for $20.

What do you think that would grade - looks really nice!

I don't collect much memorabilia, but my favorite item in my collection is a story I have that was handwritten by Casey Stengel, about the first time he faced Walter Johnson. It's written in pencil, and has tons of crossouts and stuff, but epitomizes a lot of what baseball is about to me: history, humor, competition, storytelling.

My scan of it is too big to post here, so I'll type in the content:

"I'll Never Forget The Day

It happened in October 1912 after the close of my first major league season in the National League in which I had hit over .300 and had an inflated value of my batting ability. I thought I could hit any pitcher.

A semi-pro promoter wired me at my home in K.C. the words "How would you like to come to Coffyville, Kansas next Sunday and try your luck hitting against Walter Johnson at Walter's Homecoming.

Well, Harry unfortunately for Stengel the day was clear and the game played.

Walter Johnson pitching against Earl Hamilton.

My first time at bat against Johnson I had three swings, no fouls, struck out. Second time at bat I tried meeting the ball, result three strikes, no fouls. Third time up I was now feeling cheap so I tried bunting same result without a foul ball. Fourth time up Result two swings but a moral victory I got a foul strike."

I just think that's awesome.

-Al

to it is my 1984 (I know, not vintage) Louisville Stoneware Pete Browning statue. Only one I'd ever seen until I won another one from SANDIEGOWILL on ebay a few months ago. Now I have TWO! Not noted as Browning specifically but for the 100th anniversary of Slugger and the first slugger was made for browning. About 15" tall.

Other than that, it's the KY Derby glass and autographed baseballs my dad has given me over the years.

The Mathewson will always have a special place in my collection and will never go anywhere, too many memories behind it. The Voskamps I just really enjoy. The history and obscurity of the issue fascinates me. The images are found on no other sets and the oriental style writing on the back is a plus.

...so far Cobb items ahead of Matty items on this thread. (They each got one point for the quilt/blanket/silk framed thing.) But I didn't see any other repeats. I found that interesting because my Matty cards and Cobb cards are among my all-time favorites.

I'll make it 4-to-4......

I posted the photo of Lincoln and Tad under "baseball related: favorites", and it's still there. Yesterday, I posted that a very close second, of all baseball things, was Davied Rudd's (drc) Maine lifer ring bat. David wote a little partagraph about it, but I'm sorry to say, did not post a picture after I posted.

But my post about David's hand-carved Maine lifer ring bat was deleted!

So Lincoln and Tad are O.K, but posting about someone else's hand-carved bat isn't?

Huh?
