Default Alex Rodriguez - nice gig if you can get it

So, he drops his lawsuits and agrees to sit out the season, but because the MLB season is defined as 183 "days", and he is suspended for 162 "games", he will be getting paid for the 21 "off" days, nearly $3,000,000.

Must be nice.

Question for the lawyers here: since the off days fall between the game days, and since Rodriguez is suspended for all of the 2014 season games, by implication, unless his suspension is lifted by the league between games can't the Yankees argue that his suspension also holds on these off days, and thus they are responsible for no part of his contract in 2014.

Really? Wow, you're right. Must be nice.

Please know that I am not singling you out when I posit that news items about A-Rod definitely belong elsewhere on this Board.

When joining Net54, I was under the impression that conversations would revolve around cards: the nuances; how to spot fakes; hobby trends.

My apologies to all for stirring the pot; however, thought this community was above the fray.

Can we not discuss old cardboard academically?

Best regards,

Eric

The man has been here five years, if he wants to post something very timely that isn't about old cards no problem here.

Peter,

I have no problem with the person whose post inspired my reply. My true issue is related to Net54 members not placing their posts in the appropriate area.

A-Rod's current haunts have absolutely nothing to do with Pre-war cards...period.

Just my two cents. Of course, being without power for a few days might have made me a bit cranky.

With thanks to Peter for taking my back, Eric and Kevin are both probably right about me posting in the wrong section, but this section seems to be where most "off topic" posts go (like the Rogers FBI post).

I'm happy to have Leon move it, or delete it, as he sees fit.

Wherever this thread ends up, I'm still amazed that being suspended for 162 games, can potentially still mean getting paid 11 1/2% of your yearly salary.

Oh, and he got another $3mil last month from his signing bonus.

Speaking only for my self- I have no issue with your off topic post. Alot of posts in this section are ot. And your subject line states the topic.

I'm fascinated by the fact that he seems to be getting paid for the off days.

Does that mean that every player who is suspended gets paid for off days?

It would seem so.

I absolutely love that Leslie's woodcut.

Regarding posting O/T stuff here, I generally post such stuff in the Watercooler section, but only because I don't care if only a few people join the discussion, and if the time comes when I REALLY want to post an O/T thing over here, I want to feel okay about doing so. I spit in advance on anyone who complains when I do so

Over in the Watercooler area we end up having some great discussions between only 3-4 people, whereas if we posted over here I'm sure there would be 5-10X as many posts. It's kind of a conundrum, but in the end it really doesn't matter much.

I'm so excited about the greatest pick-up I have ever made in my life, that you'd have to come to my house and beat my dog if you wanted to upset me.

I "discovered" the watercooler section just a couple minutes ago, and while I know know that I should have posted this thread over there, I'm confident that it would have been far less entertaining.

I'm with you Doug, this is crazy. I've never heard of the 183 day season before.
Has the season always been defined this way?

I understand the logic, and it also means that the players are in spring training for "free" and if they make the playoffs, it's also for "free", plus the post season bonuses, of course, but no guaranteed money.

Ok, but he's not going to spring training, so I don't understand why he should get paid for it. If in fact, those are the days for which he's getting paid.

No, my understanding is that a baseball season is defined as 183 days. I assume starting at opening day.

That would mean that spring training doesn't count, and the post season doesn't count.

It's like if you make $700 per week, and only work 5 days, but you get a hundred dollars for each day of the week, not $140 for each work day. So if you call in sick for a day, you still get $600 for the week.

Total bs that the Yankees have to pay him those millions for days off and also it counts against their salary cap (which now is meaningless as they have gone past it for the luxury tax). The ruling should be that if you cant play at all in a season you get ZERO dollars.

That said, i am so glad A-Rod did this, now maybe people will just be talking about him for a few days and then he will not be the big topic of conversation until next season. He would have been a big blackeye on baseball this season, now he wont.

I think whether or not Arod will get paid will probably hinge on his contract language. I would surprised if the Yankees wound up paying any of his salary.

From the MLB.com story :

"Rodriguez will forfeit $22,131,147 of his 2014 base salary of $25 million. The '14 Major League season is defined as lasting 183 days, and with Rodriguez suspended for 162 games, he will be paid nearly $3 million for the remaining 21 days."

The actual number he will be paid, assuming the story is correct, is $2,868,852.46.

That's about as likely as the Great Pumpkin popping out of Linus's pumpkin patch this October and bringing toys to all the good children around the world.

As for getting millions to A-Roid to sit out the year, it is worth every cent.

Oh, uh, almost forgot:
