PSA 8.5 sold for $180 in the same auction.

That's a very expensive 0.5 points to push the score on your set registry quest.

surely that 8.5 could have been made into a 9 for less $$$?

Only if you can get 9s. Which is few and far between from PSA.

Wowwww. I casually watched the REA auction. Whoever broke up their 1960 set just killed it.

You could get this EXACT one right now on COMC for $13. That pic on the left side of the card screams "Please do NOT hit it to me"!

Looks about the same! lol

Geez......I wonder if I should consign my PSA 9 1951 Bowman Billy Cox, or 54 Topps Paul Kazanski, 55 Bowman Dick Littlefield, or 55 Topps Jack Harshman.....Geez, I could use some of that to pay some of my kids college loans.

Just make sure it's the highest graded for that piece, and that the pop is low. Then sit back and watch the bidders go nuts.

A VERY interesting quote from SABR:

A sense of modesty, along with his prolific hitting – especially at home – made Mejías a fan favorite in Houston. Media perceptions of Mejías were still framed through the lens of ethnicity, however – and his annual salary was just $12,500.

Yeah. For at least part of his career, he earned less per year than his card.

I just submitted this card to SGC for my 1960 set build.

I’ll let you all know when my ship comes in and I hit it big!

Speaking of Roman Mejias I was at the very first Colt 45’s game and it was against the Cubs in 1962. Ramon hit 2 homers in the game for the Colts. One of the 64 games they won in their first season. It was played in a stadium they built in what was to be parking lot for the Astrodome which was under construction at the time. I think the stadium was sold to Mexico and may still be in use. It was called Colt stadium at the time, I think. The classic Ernie Banks batting stance is etched in my memory.. I was 13 then and now I’m 75.

I was about 4 yrs old when the Astrodome was built, being born and living half my life there, I had been there many times. I guess it's NRG Astrdome now (thanks Google) with mostly a tear down and redo of the old stadium.

Back to the original subject, the registry is a legal drug for many. Not quite as many on this forum but still out there...To each their own!
