Since Ted began a really interesting post about N162 copyright/no copyright varieties I thought I would add a little more info about this fascinating set. The N162 lithograph of John Teemer, an oarsman(rower),is based upon the photograph of Teemer which appearded in the 1887 Old Judge Zero Number Series. This photograph was taken by Jos Wood (the source of many early Old Judge images).

Jay- that's great- have you found any of the baseball photos that correspond to N162?

I also like that the Goodwin banner appears on both the top and bottom of the N174. Can't recall seeing that on an N172 before (but I'm sure you have).

Barry--That's the only card that I found a corresponding photo for. There may be others, probably in the "other" sports area. It's interesting how they added a shirt for Teemer, probably to add a little more color to the lithograph.

I noticed the shirt too- pink, no less.

The artists were likely given a good deal of leeway, and could add or subtract as long as they rendered an accurate likeness of the player.

Now that would be some nice original art to find- the finished paintings for the N162 set.

Nice observation....I have (somewhere) an image (or 2) that Geo. Harris & Sons Litho. probably
used to create the artwork for more N162 Subjects. I will look for them.

Also, in a prior thread you noted that you have 4 - N162's with the TM. Since we are down to
less than a handful of unconfirmed....are any your's these subjects ?

Thanks,

TED Z

A modified version for the Anson?

Could the Brouthers be a cropped version of this?

Could the Kelly be a cropped version of this?

The Kelly, Anson and Brothers look like they were undoubtedly the basis for the N162 cards. Great work!
I do not believe that the Glasscock image will come from the Old Judge set--there is no comparable pose.

The cover of the A36 Goodwin Album is the same pix as the woodcut in Harper's Weekly,
dated May 8, 1886....titled "A Double Play-First League Game (NY vs Bos)"
