Default gloves: clean up or not??

Posted By: Gary

I have quite a few gloves in my collection. Most of them are in excellent condition the way they are. But I have some olders ones, like a Red Schoendienst, and some newer ones that I used in Little League. I'm wondering if they would be more valuable if I had them fixed up and restored, or if having any of that done would reduce their value. Any thoughts?? Thanks!!

There are many ways you can clean the gloves, really depends on how old they are. I would start with just a rag and wipe off the dust, then maybe a bit of water on the same rag. If you had pictures I maybe able to help more

generally I like to keep gloves as is, but some always need more care

The Vintage Glove Forum is made up of a bunch of very nice fellows who can help you with this dilemma. There are already quite a few threads devoted to this very topic.

I like to use vaseline after cleaning... it brings back lustre and restores the supple nature of the leather with no damaging effects whatsoever. But many of the guys over there will swear by saddle soap for cleaning and lanolin for restoration.

If you peruse the site long enough, you'll even see where to buy the best cleaning products. The link is below... Best of luck!

I cleaned up a bunch of my old gloves using gojo (orange hand cleaner) and a soft bristle tooth brush, then finishing up with lanolin (the kind for breastfeeding mothers). They all turned out great. It's really amazing how nicely an old glove can clean up if you take the time.
