These two are porbably amongst the top favorites in my collection. 19th century Harvard, hand blown glass stein with baseball scene (I'm assuming its baseball). Flawless condition. Its a beauty.

[linked image]

Next is another Harvard piece. Trophy dated 1895 and reads "Fifth Prize for Excellence in Batting Won by H.U.B.B.C 1895" (i'm assuming H.U is Harvard Univ.)

Great pieces Brock. The mug is a real gem. I've never seen the likes of it before. Based on the pictures from the auction, I would agree that it is baseball. You can clearly see the figure 8 seems of the ball.

This has moved from one of Mark's for sale items to my recent pick-ups. Thanks Mark.

Here's a neat one that I just picked up - Mount Vernon, Washington. Clint, thanks for sending me a scan of the 49' team.

Amazing Mug, Brock... that's among the most stunning early baseball items I've ever seen (really!)

You've really got the "hot hand" right now. Please let me know if you are ever wanting to part with (sell or trade) the Connie Mack circular plaque you posted a week or so ago. Congrats again!

I came within a click of buying that Yankee Pennant. Not my niche and not enough money to go around as it is. Nice one.

Thanks. It is a beauty. It has a football scene on the other side and the University of Pennsylvania seal between the two scenes. For some reason I wasn't able to download them. The football scene is a modified painting of this picture, which is a huge 1887 photgravure.[linked image]

Thats a beautiful stein you have Glenn.
How were these types of things sold back in the day? Were they sold at the universities as souvenirs or what?

You've posted some amazing stuff lately Glenn. You're going to have to hook us up with some display photos of your collection.

I really don't know how items like this stein were marketed. My guess is that they were sold locally around the university as souvenirs or whatever.

I will try to get a photo or two up later. I am not very adept at using the camera, uploading, etc. Unlike most guys, I don't worry a great deal about displays, though I do have one central "shrine." Our house has memorabilia hanging and sitting all over the place; on top the piano, over the fireplace, on the desk, hanging on the TV room wall, etc. However, most of the good stuff is in a room which has never been visited by any non-family member. Since no other people see them, they are totally for me to see, fondle, etc. Further, because my retirement resources are a bit limited, the collection is constantly changing.

Here are photos of my "shrine." Not very good quality photos, but you can probably see all but the smaller figurals, etc. and the tobacco labels lying flat.

A good buddy gave me these. The Cubs/A's booklet is really clean and cool inside with full black and white photos of each player plus a nice writeup. I love the stealing home cover on the other.

I also got this crazy cool sweater which is super warm and fits me like a dream.

Love the cigar boxes. Obviously a focal point of your collecting. They look great on display. And the lamp is gorgeous. Thanks again.

Matt & Brock

I have only seen one other full lamp. I think Hunt's may have had one some time back. The large figural is a brass Walter Johnson. And, yes, I guess the cigar boxes are the focal point. At least, most of my money in that display is tied up into cigar boxes. I am looking for the elusive Mordecai Brown and, as far as I know, it will complete the early player photo boxes.
The Young is somewhat special because it once belonged to Young, himself.

Thanks. You will notice that the "shrine" has changed, evolved. Some items gone and new ones added. There are a few brand new additions there, thanks to a great trade with a fellow board member.

Two of my most recent additions. The mug has a crack in it but the price was great and I have a matching baseball mug for it.
The Sporting Times scorecard was a bit of a steal, but also a bit of a goof on my part. I bought it thinking I had a trade set up for it but the other collector backed out after I bought it. A shame because he had a couple items I really, really wanted.

Took a little time off from packing for a move to go to card show today. Nabbed these 2 pieces. The score card is scored second game of Double hitter Aug. 7th 1926. Senators won 9-2. Unfortunately the Train didn't pitch in the game.

Chris,
The ball was autographed by Obama at a middle school in Iowa and then sold at a charity event. I bought it from the guy that bought it at the charity event.

Glenn - AMAZING collection!!

Matt - If you EVER want to part with the Barack basketball, please let me know!! That is a beautiful sig.

While I am old, I am new to collecting older Baseball Memorabilia - it is never to late to start. I have mostly been involved with Political Memorabilia (specifically Watergate Stuff). I am impressed here!

Not a new pickup but I finally got around to finding someone that could scan these for me.

It's a set of six glass negatives of Ty Cobb and Sandy Leith.

Mike,
Thats a nice looking Cardinals piece. Looks to be in Ex+ condition and thats the first I've seen with the glass tray in it. Nice pickup.
And was that a BIN purchase? If not I dont know how I missed it.

Hi Brock,

It was a BIN that was asking $250 but accepted $150. I thought the condition was superior to others I have seen and this version is a bit more difficult to find than the more realistic bird. I also love the coloring on this example.

Just picked up some very nice items for my Nebraska collection.

1911 cabinet photo of the Superior Brickmakers - Nebraska State League Champions. You can't tell from this scan, but the pennant has writing on it just left of where it says "Superior" it has the word "cement" and something too small to read on top and bottom of that. That must have been the company that sponsored the team.
Superior 1911

also picked up a 1956 Superior Senators (Washington minor league) team signed baseball.

Thanks Clint. I noticed the guy I won these from has not left feedback for the guy who won the other ball yet. He left me feedback as soon as I paid...I contacted the seller to let him know I would buy the other ball if the other guy doesn't pay for it. Unfortunately the ball he sent me has the box for the other ball so I'm assuming he put that ball in my box...I'd like to have the right box..especially if it has the NSL paper wrapping still on it. Not that big of a deal since I didn't even know he still had the original boxes with the balls since he didn't mention it in the auction. Just a bonus, but it will kind of bother me that the original box is out there and I got the wrong one.

Nice pick-ups Mark. I was watching that Ward's sign and didn't set a snipe because I thought it was going to sell for much more than I was willing to fork out. I think you got a real bargain.

Well, I got a good enough bargain that it inspired an email from Mike H... The email was titled, "You pulled a Brock".

So I guess that a "Brock" is now synonymous with "getting a great deal".

BTW, I completely struck out last night with SCP and Clean Sweep. There were simply no Brocks to be had. Anybody else have better luck?

Actually, I thought the three Cleveland panoramic photos in SCP's auction (each was a different lot) were good buys (especially the second and third ones below) at those prices.

Well...my beautiful Cardinals figural arrived in two pieces! I'm so tired of poor packaging by sellers. It was insured sure...but this was a very nice piece that is now junk. I asked them to take extra care and that I would gladly pay extra, but it didn't help. I just hate it that a 54 year old piece is now gone.

Wow... you have had terrible luck, Mike. That is such a shame. Ebay should add (as one of their DSRs) "Quality of Packaging", as this criteria is as impotant as any of their existing ones. I'd like to see Ebay replace the "Shipping charge" criteria with one for "Packaging". We can see what the shipping charges are for ourselves, so that one is basically worthless.

It is just amazing how many sellers provide minimal protection. I would definitely avoid sellers who have a low rating on packaging (if such a rating existed). It is such a no-brainer, and easily avoidable, too! Sorry to hear the bad news...

Real sorry to hear that Mike. What a shame. I too have asked sellers on numerous occasions to handle with extra care and that I would gladly add extra $ to cover the shipping and handling. More often than not I get the 'dont worry I'll package with care' and sure enough I open the package only to find a fragile item wrapped in newspaper. Makes me want to stick to buying bats.

I agree %100 that quality of packing needs to be included in the ebay rating system. Who cares how fast a seller ships something if it arrives smashed to hell.
