Default Anyone here with knowledge of vintage football uniforms?

Posted By: Nick

I recently picked up a cabinet card of a young man in a football uniform that appears to be from the early 20th century. He doesn't look like a professional player, and I'm guessing by his age and the gear that he may have been in college at the time. I don't know enough about the early days of football to date the piece (or identify who he played for), and would appreciate any assistance. I'll post pictures later today.

TIA

Hey Jason -

He's not talking about soccer. It's a little different game on this side of the pond.

Hey Rob - you want to know about soccer I'm your man. If you want to know bout old gridiron - well then we can discuss that too! I'm a 49'ers & Cowboys fan, a bug I caught growing up in the SF Bay Area in the 70's & 80's

As a result, I collect early gridiron images as well as baseball and have several from the 1870's - 90's

One afternoon, the Seattle bus I took was filled with visiting London kids and one adult who had just seen their first baseball game (Mariners). The young Londoner I sat next to and I chatted sports, and, during the conversation, he always used the word 'soccer' instead of 'football.' I asked if he was instructed to not say football to Americans so as to not to confuse them. He said he was.

Leon stikes again. I guess nothing slips by the Moderator Dude. I see my earlier post was deleted but I'm confused...how come you would allow us to post comments about football but would delete my comment about how we might want to post some 19th century football photos in this thread??

I let this thread go as every great once in a while I don't mind another sport on the board. Sort of makes it less boring, imo. At the same time this one was started someone else said they didn't want to hijack this football thread so they ( I am guessing that is your handle ramram, and you sent the email ) start another one. At that point moderator dude steps in and says this is not a football forum. Hijacking an off topic to start another off topic isn't what I mean in the Forum FAQ's when I say "occasional". I am only trying to keep things a little focused....please don't hate me for it. regards

Nah, I didn't start the other football thread that got locked. I just mentioned in this one earlier today that maybe Jason and I could post some our early football images. That would still stay in line with the original poster who is looking for some knowledge as to the time period of certain uniforms. Also gives a little break from the same ole baseball rehash (IMO). But, hey, I'm not the Moderator Dude. I'm just one of those guys that tries to buck the trend once in a while to add a little diversity. Same girl, same clothes, same haircut...can get old after a while (ok, ok, maybe the same girl's allright).

I am game. Tell ya what, to show I am a good sport I am going to start a thread entitled "Early Football Images". Whomever would like to post one on there is fine. Ya'll better watch out for how big they are because that thread I locked (and since deleted so it didn't look like a punishment) already had a huge pic, and was going to take a while to download for anyone without high speed access. take care.....

What!!! no early hockey images thread? We demand equal treatment

Seriously, tho, i think an occasional football or hockey image thread is a good idea.

In the lower right of the large mount, it says (in raised lettering pressed into the paper)
Barney Studio
200 Appel

There may be some text following 200 Appel, but if so, it's too faint an impression for me to make out.

Thanks.

By living in SF, the 49'ers link was understandable but I kida got hooked on the Cowboys in the 70's because they were on the box all the time and well we all like to support winners! It was good through the 90's but both of em are bums now so it's a good job I live in the UK!

Nick,

I would suspect that your image is from circa 1910's - 1920's. He's wearing his school sweater and rather generic football pants but the type of cabinet card is from about this period I believe. David (cycleback) may chime in and have a better fix on this type of cabinet card.

Nick,

The pants are definitely from the late 1900's to early 1910's. However, I have seen pants like these in photos from as late as the 20's. Football gear was often handed down, especially at the high school/prep levels. I did not observe any stitching or major wear on the pants. That coupled with the hair style would place my estimate for this photo somewhere from 1910 to 1915.
