Default Scammers Are Still Representing Good Forum Members

Another heads up as a public safety announcement, There was another instance of a scammer representing a good forum member today. It's happened several times recently.
Please keep being vigilant. Contact me or another moderator if there is any doubt whatsoever of a members legitimacy, or just to verify. Thanks much!

Please be careful in the BST areas!

And a postcard, shown recently, which fits for those scammers (along with a picture of Paul Slapnicker in it)

I appreciate your help on this one. Saved me a chunk of change and I blocked this jerk so he cannot contact me. Also my advice would be to use PM for transactions instead of listing your email for future issues. Leaves a record of the transaction that can be reviewed.

Always appreciate these kinds of reminders/examples. A lot of times, I feel people get too comfortable and let their guard down just because they haven't been burnt (yet).

Protect yourself by using PayPal Goods and Services. Way too many people give away their buyer protection to save a few bucks.

Agreed! And also use PM instead of putting email in your lists. Less likely for scammers to get to you.

It can not be said too many times to ALWAYS USE PAYPAL G/S with any transaction and if it looks too good it probably is unless in person with cash..

Default They target newer members

I figure I will bump this as it's still happening daily. A pattern I am seeing, and it's not always this way, is that the scammers will target newer members. Please keep being careful, ask for their id and then look at their profile. If they have more than 20'ish posts, they aren't a scammer. Most of them will have less that 3 posts.... There are still at least a few members a month whom are getting scammed. And it seems they were always a bit loose on their vetting and just "trusted' Net54baseball. Please verify with me to be safe, if there is any doubt at all.

and some dogs watching a game..

Terrible that there's such dishonest people out there, no where is safe, unfortunately! Thank you, Leon for all that you do!

Could part of the problem be that members names are out in the open? This gives a dishonest guy a good start on finding emails and making contact outside of net54. If everyone was only identified by their username it becomes more difficult to research.

The have cursory knowledge of cards so it’s a bit hard to pick up at first. I was contacted with a few questions about T210 that in hindsight, has been discussed on the board by others and myself. Stay vigilant y’all!

Be sure and do your business through the PM system as these guys cannot access those it seems.

Every time a scammer has tried to get me, its been through claiming cards/lots publicly and them hitting the "email member" button on the post (they are pretty diligent, as this has happed ~3 times in the past 2-3 months usually within an hour of posting and every time I ask them to PM me/never receive one)

I'd like to toss into the discussion that every scam offering I've been offered on this board (me, as possible buyer) has involved an image of a card pulled off the first page of a Google Image result (often one of the first few results).

It's not a 100% giveaway because some of my more rare cards I've shared elsewhere on the internet come up on these searches, but it should give pause and requests for further/different scans if you don't know the seller.

I'm not sure I understand what's happening. What does "representing" mean here? Acting as another seller's agent somehow?

I suspect a better term might be “masquerading as”.

For example, some scammer might contact you whilst masquerading as me and offering to sell you my Mays Dice Game card for the low low price of just $50K. You jump on it and send the wire without realizing that I wasn’t really the one who contacted you, and instead you just lost your $50K.
