Default Red Sox Late 1940's Game Used Jersey

I noticed most if not all game used jerseys have a stitched in name on the inside of the collar with manufacturer/distributor and size. In this case mcauliffe/wilson. I am looking at a Red Sox one that has the player who signed it on the inside collar instead of a sewn in name tag. The signature has been authenticated. But I want to know if it's a actual game used jersey from that player. Is it common place of un heard of that a player would sign their name on the inside or do they typically have stitched in names? Is this something that might have been in Spring Training? Any info or suggestions I appreciate and thank you in advance.

According to this resource, names were generally stitched into the collar:

https://mlbcollectors.com/BOSjerseys.php

If it's an actual autograph, it probably wasn't put there while in use because teams washed jerseys after each game and an autograph would've washed out. But if it's in indelible marker, then it could've been written for game use instead of tagged in the collar, either at the major or minor league level.

Or, there could've been a collar tag that was removed when the shirt was sent to the minors, with the new owner's name written into it. Or... it could've been signed by the player after it was no longer in service.

If you could post a picture it would be very helpful.

See attached. PSA has authenticated the auto. There is some good back history from a reliable source. I'm wondering more about the signature instead of the name tag. I don't see a player taking it off. That is why I was wondering about Spring Training in the late 40's early 50's. I'm trying to get more info if it was gifted during that time...

If it is a Spring Training game used jersey.

Does the shirt look correct for 1949? What is the uniform number?

Hell, I think I need a beer after seeing that!!! Hopefully it’s legit. I’m not knowledgeable about RedSox jerseys but it looks good from first glance…

Thanks Tim. Re-stitched tagging and lack of identifiers make it clear if the seller thought it was a Ted Williams gamer, there would be authentication (Dave Grob) performed and included. I give AMI credit for strongly suggesting it is a "no-name" gamer.

Hunt has a Williams in their upcoming live auction and pre-bidding has it north of $40k already with a week to go. It has the Grob stamp of approval.

Here is what is concerning to me. The title and description changed after it was listed and the bids had it at $10k with more bids than it shows now, then it dropped to $5k and now it's at $2,376 which leads me to believe that bids were retracted. The size of the jersey has shrinkage and doesn't match the size on the tags which is concerning.

This statement: "This style of Boston Red Sox creme-colored flannel was also used for the Minor Leagues as well, during this era." is of concern as well. Does anyone know if they issued the same number for minor league players? And if so would they actually allow a minor leaguer to wear a #9 jersey?

Sure, minor league teams in the Red Sox organization would've had players with all sorts of uniform numbers, including #9. In fact, major league shirts were routinely recycled down to the minors, sometimes with number changes and sometimes without.

There are so many things wrong with that jersey, including the poor condition, that I, personally, would stay very far away from it. If I did land it, I'd have the piping restored and keep it around as a signed Williams display piece only.
