The Orlando woman is inded attractive, but I wonder if this type of ploy
helps or hurts selling sports cards on eBay. When a seller does weird things unrelated
to the merchandice for sale, I'm more likely to not bid.

I like attractive women, but you have to be a loser to pay more for
basketball cards because the seller posts a picture of a pretty woman.

Barry,

My kid was accepted to NYU and just took an apartment in Bklyn at a rehab'd factory near Flushing Ave and Wyckoff. The area is across from the 'L' station. The wife is a wreck.(Growing up on Cape Cod, her baby is a bit of a rube.) Michael on the other hand, loves the culture and diversity of the Hood.

Is the area a safe one? Would you try to convince your kid to move over to the lower east side/Village? tia, Steve F

Steve- all of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn that were once run down and considered unsafe are now becoming gentrified and built up. I have been living in Cobble Hill for 32 years and streets a few blocks from me that used to be havens for junkies now have upscale restaurants and fashionable boutiques. While I do not know exactly where your son is living chances are it is now teeming with young people and is an up and coming area. I'm sure it is pretty safe but if he is night owl and out at 3:00 AM obviously there are some risks. Please tell your wife Brooklyn is a very nice place to live and has become a magnet for a whole generation of young people. That said, it's still the city and all of us need to go about things sensibly. I'm not sure the Lower East Side is any safer and it's probably more expensive, but it is a lot closer to NYU. Coincidentally, the reason I moved into Brooklyn back in 1974 was to start NYU grad school. Thought I would stay a year or two, ended up staying forever.

I would say the closer to the school the better.

It would allow your kid to take part in more school activities... give your kid more personal time for (less commuting)... enjoy the city.... and on those rainy or snowy days - not have to worry how to get to class.

If it is an option... the school itself is in a pretty nice area. I would have your kid stay right there / or Noho / Soho / or possibly Tribeca.... Anything downton.

Find out where the other school kids are going to be - and thats where I would have my kid stay.

good luck.

(I work right were soho and tribeca meet)

The rule of thumb with New York safety is that you only really have to worry in desolate areas. If there are people on the streets, or some traffic, then you're safe. So in that regard, there are some streets in Harlem that are safer then yuppie Tribeca.

Brooklyn still has some strange pockets they just label Williamsburg to lure people in. In general, anything near the L has either gentrified, or will be soon. They've sped the L train up so it runs more frequently now to accomodate the influx of new residents looking for slightly cheaper rent. Frankly, I find Brooklyn to be a bit cultish and a lot of the people moving there are a bit naive in that these are the same people who would have been scared to even visit not to long ago...but it really is safe by city living standards. There are some beautiful and peacefull blocks, and the interesting thing about NY is if you're ona ghetto run down street, you can probably walk a few blocks and find one of the nicest city streets in the nation. Brooklyn is compressed so that you can ride on a bike and and cross through it in a flash. As long as he doesn't mind the commute, I wouldn't say he's missing anything by not living closer to campus. You move to New York because it's New York. The kids who stick to Manhattan schools like they're on a campus in Michigan are really missing out. Mind you, I live in Manhattan most of the year, and would have trouble leaving, I do find myself having to reverse commute now for social obligations. So I still have to ride that darn L train at 3am!

About the Lower East Side - the weekends are attracting what we call a Bridge and Tunnel crowd now. The rent isn't cheap. It's a very youth oriented fun area but the only advantage would be convenience (as in, he could run home between classes instead of having to kill time somewhere). The problem with living in the East Village is the apartments are mostly cramped in walk up tenements. The rents don't really reflect that anymore.

Like Barry said, he's fine unless he's going home super late, and even then it's not like he'll be stepping into a warzone. Just tell him for your own piece of mind that you'd like him to take a car service home past anytime past 2:30,and pay for it. Consider it part of renting in Brooklyn.

Thankyou Barry, Joe and Ed...

This is terrific. I will print these replies and present them to my country bumpkin. Although on a smaller scale, I grew up in South Boston and Dorchester and thrived. She even cringes when we ride through my old hood, "Are these doors locked?". Heck, even my Yaz, Orr and Havlicek cards survived quite nicely!

Just don't read "Last Exit to Brooklyn"

Growing up in the Wisconsin, my opposing visions of New York City came from
Woodie Allen and Taxi Driver. Interestingly, in 'Annie Hall' Allen visits
Wisconsin, but his vision of the state didn't resemble anything I'd seen.
And Annie, who's supposed to be a Wisconsinite, mispronounces the state name.
At least, she doesn't pronounce the word 'Wisconsin' the way a native would say it.
Upon hearing the scene where Annie Hall first tells Woodie that she's from
'Chippewa Falls Wisconsin,' a native should know that neither Annie Hall nor
Diane Keaton is from Wisconsin. In fact, the specific pronounciation
she uses is a big non-no to many natives, with some perceiving its use as
a slight.

You know guys, I hate to spill the beans, but ebay has a vast network of pornographic photos, videos, and other assorted merchandise. Just hit "buy" then "See other categories" then scroll all the way down to "mature audiences" then a few more entry clicks and you're in. Not that I would ever look at it myself, this is just what I have been told.
