Default Does Anyone Feel Uncomfortable Purchasing T206's Off Ebay?

Posted By: Dan

I'm a slabhead collector with a quarter of a set. I was wondering though how difficult is it to purchase ungraded T206's on eBay? With misleading text, usually a horrible scan and so much deceit, are only the super stars at risk or is there a ton of deceit with the Lena Blackburne's and Ed Kargar's of the world? I'm always leary about the 'Bay. Examples below. Any worry or paranoia? I understand the 'too good to be true philosphy and I would much rather hold a card than base an opinion on a fuzzy scan from a seller who is an id instead of a name. Mucho Gracias VBC Forum!

Hi Dan,
Looks like a good seller to me. I have book marked this card, and plan to bid, so I wouldn't worry too much. Good luck Brian

PS I see another board member RB Craig, has had several sucessful nice transactions with the seller.

...cards are long and narrow like the Bresnahan. They were put into narrow cigarette packages. The Merkle looks a bit odd to me, I would probably stay away.

I won't pay more than $100 for a T206 card on ebay unless it is graded by PSA, SGC or GAI. And I worry about PSA cards that do not have the hologram on the back -- those with the hologram on the back were graded when PSA's standards were a bit higher, in my humble opinion. The last few PSA's I've bought without the hologram have been slightly overgraded. Maybe they deserve the number they got, but they're definitely on the low end of that number.

I have found SGC T206 cards are worth every penny.

I share your concern about raw T206s on eBay. I've bought quite a few and I believe I've picked up a Willis that was trimmed and a Carr that may be fake (why would anyone fake a low grade minor league common?). I'm sending both for grading and it will be interesting to see how they come back. Getting some question marks on eBay has led me to PSA graded cards and for all the issues people have with them I think they improve your chances of not getting ripped off considerably.

There are several eBay seller's that I'm comfortable with and buying raw from them is no problem.

Take a look at scans on the t206museum web site or graded scans on the PSA Registry and you can get a good feel for what a specific card should look like.

Now this eBay T206 Honus Wagner has to be good, right? I need it for my set.

How soon we forget about the numerous errors and goof's done by some of our great authenticating slabbing graders.
A day doesn't go by without reading about a stroke of genius at work.
It should be required reading by newbies.

I bought a common but very nice Cycle back from Mark Macrae at his last show, and didn't notice till i got it home that there was a little notch on the top border.

Hey, Mark--what's this little notch?"
"It's a little notch--I lowered the price because of it."
"Oh yeah..so you did..."

I second your thought Joe. I have no idea how anyone can have anymore confidence with PSA then buying raw, way too many screw up, trimmed cards in holders and really questionable business practices to have any confidence in PSA.

I do buy some PSA cards but they are lowgrade so low risk. Alos if you are wary of raw T206's buy from repuatable sellers and you will be just fine.
