Wonder what PSA would do today if you submitted one?

Never knew this. Missed earlier thread.

I don't normally look at a lot of threads in this section, but the title piqued my curiosity. I am glad I did. I knew immediately it was not Babe Ruth. I guess the expression 'You tell a lie enough times and people will believe it' holds true here. For everyone's edification here is a photo of Ernst (NOT Ernest) Brandsten with two of his star divers at Stanford circa 1926-27. Dave Fall on the left won a silver medal in diving in 1924. He became an attorney practicing maritime law in California. Just before his death in 1964 he was appointed a district court judge in California. Pete Desjardins on the right won a silver medal in diving in 1924 and gold medals in both diving events in 1928. This is also posted in the other thread about this card.

Default Ernie

Thanks, Michael.

Dale Irvin posted this picture of Ernie at the same venue coaching another diver. Note the hat, bow tie and socks. Even the same jacket is hanging on the railing:

Interesting. I have one of these in my collection, and just assumed Ruth had slimmed down. Oh well, its staying in my Yankees collection, as i think most people still consider it a Ruth card. I bought it years ago when it wasnt too expensive, so no big deal.

Frank,

Yes, I saw that image. I thought it would be helpful to people to see a full on photo of Brandsten for reference. It would also be good to give those moron slabbers a little smack on the nose. It is not the same sweater by the way. The one on the card has an 'A', the one in the photo has numbers. Yes, they were taken around the same time, but you will also notice that the white slippers would be visible if they were they were done close together.

I don't understand what you mean here, since you now known NOT to be Ruth.
I don't see how anything else holds water, if you will.

I was always skeptical if it was Ruth or not. Ruth's name is not mentioned at all and it's a swimming card. I also thought it didn't really look like Ruth but wasn't sure either way. The eyes looked weird. I'm glad I never bought one but feel sorry for those that paid Ruth prices.

Unfortunately, I'm sure we'll be seeing these for many more years (decades probably) being sold as Ruth cards.

Well, right now there are 8 slabbed cards of this on Ebay listing it as a Ruth card, so if the hobby still thinks its Ruth, for now I will keep it in my Yankees collection and fool people who i show it to. LOL.

At this time anything left of the decimal would be a good price. As far as keeping it because people think it's Ruth, no worries. We won't tell. It can just be our little secret. Kind of like the Marquard (Ruth) stamp was for years.

it will take time for the "news" to circulate...but like the boys companion/marquard ruth...over time most prices will come down. there will always be unscrupulous types who refuse to acknowledge the facts and will abide by the flip and continue to promote as a ruth card.

Default same sweater

It is not the same sweater by the way. The one on the card has an 'A', the one in the photo has numbers.

Actually I think it is at least a similar sweater if not the actual one..believe it reads 'USA'...just my opinion.....

Yes, I agree. Looking at the photo I thought it looked like a number and did not consider it to be a letter.

Can't believe these are still trying to be sold, but with new people entering the hobby everyday, I guess those that paid large for their cards are looking to take advantage of those less educated.

Luckily I bought mine a long time ago and raw so it wasnt expensive at all. At this point in time, I dont want to sell it and screw someone else, so I guess it will just sit in my Yankee collection as an "error" card or novelty.

I don't understand why the TPG's are receiving all the blame. I'm not sure but
I would imagine they were cataloged wrong before they were mis-labeled by
the grading companies whose main purpose is to grade the cards and most
likely rely on the catalogs for their labeling.
