Default Caramelo Deportivo Dandridge Variation Survey

Given the obscurity of this WWII-era Cuban set, this post will probably get few looks and even fewer responses. But, hope springs eternal.

In the 1945-46 issue, there are (at least) two versions of the card of Ray Dandridge #25, a Hall of Famer.

On the first, or "error," version, his position is misspelled "Shortsotp."

On the second, or "corrected," version, his position is spelled "Shortstop." (second scan courtesy of LOTG Auctions -- Hi Al.)

(Sorry, I don't know how to make the second scan bigger, but trust me, it says "Shortstop.")

Beyond this spelling difference, there are other formatting differences.

For those who have one or the other (or both) versions of this relatively obscure card, could you let me know which one(s) you have?

Thanks.

Scot Reader

Okay so far that's:

7 "Shortsotp"
2 "Shortstop"

(Count includes my "Shotsotp" but does not include the 1 "Shortsotp" and 2 "Shortstop" I found on the web).

Thank you Scott!

Can I ask where you bought it (if you remember and want to share)?

EDITED TO ADD: Sorry for putting you on the spot if it was a private sale. I was thinking auction house!!!

Can I ask where you bought it (if you remember and are willing to share)?

I bought from a Net54 member. I'll PM the name.

Default 2 More--

I have two of these, Scot, one of each:
an SGC20 that I got from a Net54 member a few years ago, "Shortsotp,"
and an ungraded one that I got on ebay, "Shortstop".

I'll be interested to see the results.

Seriously, none of you have my email address or phone number? Haha. Anyway, your numbers (3 to 1 ratio) seem to be about right in my experience. There are LOTS of little variations like that in this set. I'm always surprised when anyone else cares about them or even notices them.

Caramelo Deportivos with tougher variations are the new T206 rare backs! Right?

Ron -- Added your input. Thanks.

Ryan -- Of course I thought of you, but actually I don't have your email or phone number and figured you would respond to the OP if you were inclined (which you now have -- thanks!).

I guess we can ballpark it at about 3 "shortsotp" to 1 "shortstop."

If you are willing to educate us on other Cuban variations you find particularly interesting, we're all ears!

Scot

I may have spoken too soon when I quoted 3 to 1. I just checked on scans that I have as well as examples I currently own. The ratio was 13 to 2.

Scot,

There are tons of little variations in various Cuban issues. I find it fascinating, but there hasn't been any kind of premium on the rarer backs, as far as I've notice. But in the case of the Dandridge, shouldn't the "Shortstop" variation at least carry a little bit of a premium? Maybe now it will.
