Default Goodwin Auctions Wins

Hadn't seen if anyone started this yet? Curious your take on Goodwin's latest auction - was anyone surprised on the T206 Plank @ $87K? Any others surprise you - high or low??

Did you have any nice pick-ups? Show them off!

I had a number of cards in for consignment, overall I was quite happy with the return. Really surprised on the Aaron an Clemente rookies as well as several others. Thank you to all who bid on the cards I had in, I hope you will be happy with them!

Ed

Some of the prices are incomprehensible to me. E.g. a 53T Mantle 7, not terribly well centered, at 19K and a Clemente rookie SGC 80, badly centered, at 5K. (A month ago one sold for 2K.)

Yes, but a card that is easy to find does not go up 2.5 times in value in a month. This is clearly an aberration of some sort.

Would have to agree with Peter. There are a number of nice 55 Clemente rookies on eBay that aren't priced that high. The Mantle is nutz!

Yea a few of those seem very high. Other than that Mantle and Clemente, the PSA 9 Ryan stands out to me. I thought that card was in the 15-20k range. A 1958 Mantle BVG 8 doesn't seem like a 4k card either. Both almost doubled all time VCP highest reported sales.

7k for a PSA 4.5 51 Mantle also seems high. 5s have been selling for less and 6s not much more.

Odd pricing....that is for sure. It is like someone doesn't eat shrimp so they go to the fanciest restaurant and pay $100 for fried shrimp. Little do they know the can go to Red Lobster, and for $16 get all you can eat!

I would suspect that some of the people that buy these are not board members here or they would certainly know better.............

If these auctions are legit and actually get paid, then either these are people who are essentially clueless about the sportscard market, or to whom these sums are trivial. Or both.

Is it though? It seems to me it's mostly just a few rookie cards for the most part.

Key HOF rookies and high grade Mantles seem to be going crazy. I haven't noticed the trend in anything else. I would say it's people fighting for the PSA registry but that doesn't explain the SGC 80 Clemente.

I think the herd mentality often feeds upon itself. When collectors hear that an area is hot, and that area has always been on their want list, they will sometimes try to buy that card out of fear that it may continue to go up beyond their price range. So they want to get a card into their collection while they can (they believe). I think this is what is happening to the Mantles and the key HOF rookies. The high end can sometimes drag the mid-range grades up also to a degree because of this.

I truly don't get the Mantle. Almost 20K for a 7 that's off top to bottom? For that price you could get all four Goudey Ruths in a nice midgrade.

Yea that doesn't make sense. I remember the dead centered 7 that sold a couple months ago on Heritage for 10k which seemed high but made sense because of the eye appeal. To double that, which as far as I know was an all time record for the card, seems hard to believe to say the least.

PSA 8s were selling for under 20k just a few months ago.

I've heard that rumor too and I think it's urban legend. Guys living off the grid in caves who ONLY bid in Goodwin? Come on.

Rumor or not these sales have me wondering if I should use them for a couple of cards I want to sell.

I think there are probably many explanations depending on the card.
1. Shill bidding.
2. Sale isn't real, didn't go through.
3. Huge premium for centering.
4. Your friendly neighborhood card doctor thinks it can be worked on and improved.
5. Bidder with lots of money and big ego who just wants to win it.
6. Stupidity.
