Mr. October

People give him a bad time because of his arrogance, but Steinbrenner called him Mr. October, this is World Series time and I want to know whether Mr. October was truly the greatest clutch hitter in the history of baseball. Was there any vintage ballplayer that was comparable to Mr. October when the chips were down? Let me hear of ballplayers and interesting scans if you have them.

Clutch hitter, my ass. In fact, hitter, my ass. In his entire career, he hit .300 exactly once.

The only thing "Mr. October" was great at was bragging. As someone (who could actually play baseball) once said, "There ain't enough mustard in the world to cover that hot dog."

The greatest quote about Reggie came from Catfish Hunter. When they came out with the Reggie bar, Cat said "Don't put a Reggie bar in your pocket - you'll get mustard all over your pants."

That said, Reggie was quite a performer when the lights were brightest. But I wouldn't call him the greatest ANYTHING in the history of baseball. He was a good player, a Hall of Famer, but that's about it.

Reggie used to contend that the "progression" went this way: Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, Jackson.

I'll have to agree with you on that. The Babe was in a league of his own. Also, if you include his wins pitching with the Boston Red Sox in the World Series, arguably as good or
better October clutch player than Reggie.

reggie jackson was one of the best post season hitters in the history of baseball. he not only excelled with the yankees but was on the great oakland team of the early 80's. the teams he was on were winners. that is a fact. besides jackson, george brett,lou brock,derek jeter,pepper martin,yogi,mantle,ruth,gehrig,dimaggio all were great in the post season. i don't think any of the 1950's brooklyn dodgers make the post season best of list.

What about Mantle......18hr's is pretty impressive.



Don't really know who considers Jackson to be the best of anything.
