Here are some recent 19th C. pickups...well, very recent...both are products of the Atlantic City National this past week.

1. c. 1850s - 1860s, single piece, Lemon Peel Style base ball.
2. H. Harwood & Sons Mfg. sales slip for an 1871 transaction of baseballs and bats.

I have never posted anything from my collection for a number of reasons, not the least of which is I did not know how (also no scanner). But Derek h2oya tried to teach me how with photos so here goes. Apologies in advance.
Since my main interests are books and photographs of the Wrights and Chadwick, I am starting wiyh a page from Chadwick's Game of Base Ball (1868) on which Chadwick has made a major correction to the printed text. There are other examples.

Derek, I tried, thank you for pushing me. Gary, I think Murnane tried to accumulate older photos, possibly for inclusion in a planned book or guide, that never materialized. I have what I believe to be a tintype of Murnane which I will post to see if it can be confirmed somehow. I am glad you started this thread, I will try to post more later.

Another favorite. 1891 Beaneaters & by far the largest photo I own, somewhere around 20 inches wide.

Not a 19th century guy normally, but fell in love with the pose and image quality as soon as I saw it. Best guess is it is Fred Rehse, but still can't figure out how a guy who played in 2 games has such a great looking cabinet and multiple N172s but, as best I've been able to determine, nothing else.

Boston Common stereoview described as showing the only Massachusetts game action. Photo is by John D Heywood and published by Frank Rowell, who was Heywood's publisher from 1863 to 1865. Believe yellow mount is indication of stereoview from that time period also.

So - you own that tintype. I've been asked about this one. I can't eliminate the possibility that it is Murnane. One can actually make a strong argument that it's him - too many individualizing characteristics seem to match. This one is associated with another tintype claimed to depict Joe Battin - that one also appears to be correct.

I must say that this gem slightly goes beyond 19th Century; however, the majority of the subjects portrayed here are 19th Century dudes.

Besides, the significance of this piece is that it represents the year that there was no Major League World Series.

photo measures 9.5"x11" and is mounted to 11"x13". So yes, I would say it is rather large.

I like this thread so much I am stretching it a bit to show this painting. Although not from the 19th century, it depicts A G Spalding from the famous Warren cabinet pose. Not sure who painted or when, but it will have to serve as my Warren cabinet for now. I got it in a Hunt auction, which described it as possibly King Kelly.

One more painting, also not from 19th century, but entitled "an old timer at the bat", by Griswold Tyng, a student of Howard Pyle. It was likely painted about 1910 to 1920. I like to think the catcher's mask, which is featured is somehow connected to James Tyng. If anyone knows anything about where this appeared, or a connection between the artist and James Tyng, I would love to hear about it. I have seen his work as calendars and magazine illustration.
