Default Another contest with a twist

Posted By: leon

Since I feel this board is about the cards AND the hobby I am going to try to get both into a contest. With the previous contests a little bit was learned and hopefully this one will be a little better. At the end we will all have learned something too. What a concept!! I think the guessing of the final auction price was good before so this time we will do it with a card no one has missed and will go beyond a lot of folks budgets. If you are bidding on this one you are already headed into some high water with a great card. Charlie/MANONTHEROCK (the one auctioning this) had absolutely nothing to do with the pick of it as I emailed him and asked him if it was ok. He said fine but please cover me a little as some might think something about it. Trust me...this one is all me. So here we go....Please guess the final price of this card. Going over is ok too. In case of a tie the first one to say the price wins it. So if someone goes over, someone else is under, and they are even in pricing, then the first response, or edit *(YOU ARE ALLOWED ONE EDIT TO YOUR ANSWER)wins. But here is the caveat. In order to win you have to email me, before the end of the auction, with the names of 3 of the original 6 inductees into the Card Collectors HOF (by Irv Lerner). I will email back if you are right or wrong, up till Monday, then I will be at work and you are on your own. You can guess at the HOF answers all you want to. ALL BID GUESSES NEED TO BE DONE IN THIS THREAD AND ALL GUESSSES FOR HOF INDUCTEES NEED TO BE TO MY EMAIL at leonl@flash.net. I will be at work when it ends but will give the winner and answers after work on Monday evening. You may ask friends and family for help with the answers too. If anyone posts the HOF answers on the board they will be disqualified and greatly frowned upon. Please don't do that. The prize will be the cool looking E92 Nadja Stone card on its way to me, that we talked about recently.....So without further ado here is the auction (below) to guess. THIS BOARD IS EASTERN TIME AND ALL PRICE GUESSES MUST BE DONE BY 4PM EASTERN TIME ON MONDAY THE 26th, well before the auction closes.... The guesses for the HOF inductees need to be done before the close of the auction to my email...The winner will be the closest to the price while having the correct HOF answers...If this contest freaks out for some reason I reserve the right to cancel it and do another. I think I have everything covered though.... Start your engines and good luck !!! moderator dude

It was in a publication put out by Mr.Lerner. I purposely wanted this to be a little tougher than the last contests....we'll see how it goes. I do know the answers and where they came from, of course. I am not sure they are on the web or not. That's not where I found them. I think the link is fixed and the apostrophe is taken care of (I am getting better though )....regards

There are many in the hobby that would know this answer. After 20 minutes I don't think it's time to give up quite yet. To make it a little easier the list is from the 1970 Publication "Who's Who in Card Collecting"....published by Irv Lerner....

I think most of us could get the majority of the names, but how could anyone know how long one would need to be in the hobby to qualify for this Hall of Fame? That part is a bit too tough.

By the way, is this the kind of Hall of Fame you could take the kids to, as in: "okay Johnny, you've been bugging me all week to take you to the card collectors Hall of Fame...get in the car, we're going right now!"

You would have to own the publication which only a few might. So here's the deal. I am going to modify the original rules to state that all you need to do is guess the price, with all of those caveats, and send me the names of 3 of the original 6 inductees into it. Period. I am going to amend the original post to try to make it easier to qualify. Hopefully this will make it more fun which is what it's supposed to be.....

edited to answer Barry's question......this HOF was only on paper...no physical place as far as I am aware.....

I guess the new rules are a little easier. We now have 2 folks qualified and I will not change the rules anymore. I apologize for making it too difficult to start out.....Hopefully everyone will be able to at least guess 3 names....1-2 are real easy but the 3rd isn't as easy....best regards

Just went on ebay to check the status of the card and all the pictures of it are gone. Anyone else notice this, or is it my computer?

Be sure to get your guesses into me on the 3 Card HOF inaugural inductees. You will not be able to win unless you have that correct answer to one of my email addresses before the end of the auction. Also, the last time to guess on a price is 4pm Eastern time, which is the time on this board....No more waiting to the last minute....though it was certainly within the rules last time. Also, for the record, no one that has tried to guess has been shut out on the names. I am making sure of that as much as I can. The question wasn't supposed to stump anyone it was supposed to make it a tad bit more difficult as a barrier of entry.....in the end it's all fun...I am sure the auctioneer hopes Hal is correct ...... You can email me at work if you need to... lluckey@moredirect.com with answers to the question or the normal home address as I will be there before the auction ends. good luck !!

In all of the excitement I did the usual, fell asleep on the couch . I haven't double checked but it looks like Glenn will be the big winner. Maybe the start of a new collecting focus? Congrats Glenn and thanks to everyone that played....The card should arrive to me within a day or two then he will be loading back up on a plane out of DFW to Glenn.....best regards

To kind of finish this off (I was in a little bit of a rush this morning to get out of the house so I could come to the office and be on the board ) .....the original inductees had to have 20 years in the hobby, were elected by a committee of 20-25, and were:

Burdick
Corson
Bray
Wharton Tigar
Orem
Payne

The history of the hobby is fascinating to me so don't be surprised if there is another contest with a test question in it. But who knows......thanks again to all who played....
