Can someone describe to me the different varations of the N172 Old Judge George Wood card?

There are 4 different poses. I pulled three of the pics from GFG and the other is a scan of the fourth pose not shown on GFG.

Both correct. There are four known pose variations, batting, fielding-hands neck high, fielding grounder, and throwing. Within these pose variations there are 12 different known caption variaitons (3 different captions each for the four pose variations--I think). Jay can probably confirm this.

I think I'd be happy with the four poses... now on the other hand there are collectors that might select one player and try to locate every variation possible for that player...

I suppose it would be great if there were only two poses of that player.

On the fielding grounder pose - what are the different variations, and are any of them any rarer than the others? I see the "Phila" one quite often - but I think I've also seen one that says "Philadelphias", that I don't see quite often.

Meant to chime in earlier, but just now getting around to it. I thought I'd add a little information on just how many variations can be found. George was issued four poses in 1887 with no new poses being added at a later date. However, Goodwin & Co. made frequent and regular use of the original four poses as follows:

1887 - All four initially issued as part of the long numbered (leading '0') type 1 1887 cards. The type 1 card has the "Old Judge Cigarettes" displayed as an arched banner. All four cards were re-issued as type 2 cards (still 1887 issue with the Old Judge Cigarettes advertisement now typically found in a box with name, position, and team written in script at bottom). Gypsy Queen also got involved in 1887 and issed at least 3 of the 4 poses under their brand.

1888 - At least 3 of the 4 poses were issed as type Fb cards (Old Judge Cigarettes at bottom of card in bold type but smaller in size than the Fa cards). Goodwin began offering cabinet size versions. 3 of the 4 poses can be found in cabinet form.

1889 - Again, 3 of the 4 poses can be found as 1889 cards.

Looks like a different pose is missing for nearly each instance of only 3 poses being found a particular way, so all poses are fairly easy to find. George Wood is a good example of why you shouldn't try to collect all variations of Goodwin & Co.s product, even if it's just a single player. George Wood has only 4 poses, but the Cartophilic listing shows 22 variations and counting.
