Default Patterns in the T209 II Set

Posted By: Seth B.

I figured along with a general post, I'd also put a question up for some of the many experts on the board aswell.

I noticed these two cards, one is mine (Gastmeyer) the other is not (taken from an older ebay auction, my thanks to whomever won):

The similarity in pose is so obvious, they're doing the same thing in front of the same backdrop, it could be the same person if Mr. Novak weren't a bit slimmer. They're also, obviously, from the same team. I wouldn't be surprised if these were from the same day and the same photography studio.

Does anyone know any other such consistencies in this set? I know there are teams with more portraits than others, but are there similar outdoor backdrops in any of the outdooor poses? And do we know anything more about who took these shots?

Seth, there is consistency of the photo set-up among the players for the different teams. So many of the Rocky Mount players will be with the same backdrop, some teams (W-S) will have portraits, etc.

Nice Novak, it looks eerily familiar to mine (j/k)

Rhett, it is yours! I pulled the image off of the closed ebay auction, thanks for reposting a clearer scan. Nice card there,

Seth

Seth-

I believe the general consensus on the T209 set’s images is what you mentioned above. Each team’s images for the set were shot in the same place at the same time. As a result of this, each team set of cards looks very similar. All of the Winston Salem cards are studio portraits, as are the Greenville cards and Greensboro cards. On the other hand, players on the Richmond team and Anderson team are shown in fully body shots on their actual playing field (or at least right next to it in the grass).

The one anomaly to all of this (to the best of my knowledge) is the Raleigh team and their images. To my knowledge, this is the only team in the set where the photos for the cards were not taken at one certain time and place. In fact, I believe the images were taken in at least three locations (one location being outside in front of what looks like stadium bleachers, one in a studio with a backdrop that makes them appear to be playing in the street and another in a studio where the players are posed in front of a completely gray background).

Please note that the Hobbs card does not belong to me.

Zach and Rhys, awesome posts, thanks for the quick and informative response. Unbelievable Fayetteville cards, Zach, the same guy looks like he's loitering in the background of the Lavoia, Dobson, and Luyster. They must have lined these guys up really quick for a photo op. Fun cards, thanks,

-Seth

Nice cards Zach, thanks for posting them.

Here are some of my T209s showing players from the same team:

My cards are pretty beat up, but it seems like Goldsboro players also do not necessarily have similar poses (unless my Sharp is from a team other than Goldsboro and the paper loss is hiding the other team). T209 collectors can certainly shed some light on this issue, keep the scans coming.

The two Goldsboro cards both certainly show players from the same team, great post Andrew. That gives Raleigh a friend and adds one more team to the list. I know there are a few members here with near sets; I’d love to see them chime in on this issue. Here are a few more scans. I really like the portraits shown on the Greenville cards and the in-action studio shots on the Wilmington players remind me of the N172 set.

I'd never noticed the background patterns, Seth and guys, great stuff!!

We need everyone to post their black and white Contentnea cards.

Here's mine, Clark with Norfolk. He's reaching so high with his catcher's mitt that it must have been one of my ancestors who threw that pitch!

Here is some information from a long-time T209 collector:

"The majority of the Goldsboro team player photos that I have are captured with an interesting baseball stadium background. I do have three baseball player portraits from that team. ... Handiboe, Merchant and Morgan."

It is interesting that perhaps only three portraits of Goldsboro players are found and a majority of photos were taken with the stadium background. Perhaps the portrait players joined the team later in the season? Or, since it appears that the T209 action photos may have been taken in rapid succession. . . It may be that those three players didn't arrive early enough prior to the game to make the initial photo shoot? It certainly is fun to speculate. Thanks to all who have posted scans. Zach, those Greenville players look great all lined up.

Thanks for the informative post, Andrew. It does appear that the photos were taken in a very short period of time, almost like the photographer was in a rush. As a result of this, I find it very possible that the few select Goldsboro players did somehow miss getting their photographs taken and had to get them taken on a later date. Confirming the fact of these photographs being taken in a rush, three of the four Fayetteville cards I posted seem to have the same single player standing behind them in the background.

Here are a few more images to keep this thread alive. The Richmond cards are probably my favorite in the set.

Great cards, Brian. I could really use that Wingo, beautiful card. Here are two Winston-Salem players that you need. Feel free to email me if you want to work out a trade.

Hi Zach,
My Painter is at the graders, but I do still need Cote. The Wingo is too nice to trade away at the moment, but maybe in the future. Be well Brian

Hi Frank,
I'll try to post a few scans from the other teams when I have a chance. Be well Brian

Frank, thanks for the sum up, also some notes on the first series:
-Martin (Greensboro) shows up in both sets as a portrait, but there is an outdoor backdrop in his T209-I card and nothing in his T209-II card.
-Raleigh is all outdoor shots in the first series (Booles, Pope, Fullenwider, Hoffman).
-Goldsboro has both an outdoor shot and a portrait (Crockett inside, Stubbe outside)
-Wilson players are all shown as portraits with solid color backgrounds (Armstrong, McGeehan, Sisson, Lane, Cooper).

-Seth

EDITED to switch Martin's portrait types!

Thanks for the hard work on those lists, however, one team is still missing, Greensboro. Similar to the Goldsboro team, these cards are all studio portraits.

Also, the Wilson cards show the players posed outside in front of bleachers, similar to the Hart, Raleigh card I posted above. This team seems to be the most difficult to locate. I can only really recall seeing a handful, McGeehan, Armstrong, Lane and Clarp. Scott B. pointed out a strange variation in the photograph’s borders which can only be found in the Wilson cards. A thin black border separates the card’s image from the white borders. Here are some examples, though none of them are mine.

(Wilson players with the thin black line)

(Wilson player without the thin black line dividing the image from the borders)

One more quick thought, Lynchburg cards can also be found with two seperate styles of images, action outside poses and studio portraits.
