I've noticed that there are a few seattle located board members so I thought I would ask the question...Are there any good aspects about being a vintage baseball collector in Seattle? Specifically, should I know about any card shops, shows, dealers, or other resources related to 19th century and early 20th century baseball cards?

thanks.
robert

There are a number of knowledgeable amd nice early baseball card/memorabilia collectors in Seattle, including folks who posts from time to time on the board. When I moved to Seattle from a different part of the country, I quickly learned it's all about the PCL-- a subject I remain woefully ignorant about.

Where do you live? (I live in West Seattle).

I live in Vancouver, BC (2 hours up the I5) and Seattle collectors taught me to appreciate PCL, the Northwest League and similar regional baseball teams, rather than dwell on the stars of the majors.

And Jeff O taught me everything I know about hockey

Here's a picture of Bob Brown, father of Vancouver baseball (from the City of Vancouver Archives, alas)

Seattle is one of the few cities that got those elusive 1949 Bowman PCL cards.

There's little question that Jeff O. is the world's expert on Seattle hockey memorabilia. He's very knowledgeable about baseball memorabilia as well.

I live just east of Spokane, WA, almost at the Idaho border. That's about 5 hours east of Seattle, which passes for close around here.

The husband of a woman I work with used to be a card dealer. He said he saw 2 common T206's in about 3 years of dealing. That about sums up the vintage dealing here.

Wow, a mini-Seattle love-fest! Maybe it's time for the second ever Network54 Seattle get together - the last one was attended by me, David and a guy who's name escapes me... he was a relative of Christy Mathewson... I'm sure some of you remember him.

U-Trading used to be the best place for vintage 'till they closed up shop. Check in over at Gasoline Alley Antiques in the Greenlake area of Seattle and say "Hi" to Kieth Schnieder. Not a lot in the way of vintage cards, but some really cool stuff.

Max is too kind with his hockey comments... after all, he is a Canucklehead, so his DNA contains more hockey knowledge than a little ole' boy from Philly could ever have.

As for hockey in Seattle... good news! My book "Hockey in Seattle" is due to be published by Arcadia Publishing in December. It covers 1915 to the present day, 128 pages and 177 photos. Check out my website for a scan of the cover!

And BTW - I'm always up for another Network54 "Seattle Chapter" meeting (probably at a Starbucks - it is Seattle after all).

Jeff

Starbucks?! Yikes, that's only good as an investment. How about at Uptown? Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair is this weekend, so you never know when a Canadian might come south.

I'd be willing have a Seattle area vintage baseball (and hockey) meeting. Last time we met on a Saturday downtown. For those who haven't been to downtown Seattle, there are probably 50 Starbucks, 40 Tully's and 40 other coffee places.

Would Portlanders be welcome. It would be nice to meet other collectors in the Northwest.

Max! Are you in town this weekend? When's lunch? Tacos or Teriyaki?! You know, the Thunderbirds have their home opener on Saturday! Have our mutual friend set something up! (I love giving orders)

Jeff
