Here is the Twin Oaks Sportscard show upcoming schedule -

http://www.twinoaksshows.com/

Every once in a while a couple dealers show up with some decent Post-War, not too much in the line of Pre-War. Lots of new stuff and supplies. I get lucky every once in a while...

I will be assisting Scott. I have been instructed to take down anyone who reaches in the display case and roll my eyes at beginner's questions. Scott says I'm surly, don't hide my disdain for others and talk with my mouth full, so should be a natural.

Conor, I bought three dealer cases, a vertical display case and other props. It's my first full-blown show as a dealer, so looking forward to it. Kind of a prep for Cleveland.

You dig up any Seattle Zs?

Dave Fallen - ain't hungry enough to sell my sets of the items you requested. if you ever see me a couple hundred pounds lighter, assume I will be hungry enough!

I spent all day today creating my first back-drop for displaying cabinet photos at the show. The cashiers at Lowes love me.

I'll be wearing a 1920's baseball uniform - haven't decided which one yet, but I'm sure there won't be many of us.

First time I had ever been to the WSSCA card show in Seattle, and can't wait for the next event in November. The selection is huge, something for everyone, that's for sure. Great to meet Mark M, Andrew, and Sandy at the show albeit very briefly Saturday.

Absolutely horrible traffic, left Eburg at 10, got to Seattle at 1130 (about 100 miles) but it took another one and a half hours to get to Shoreline (about 15 miles). Didn't get there until 1, or so, and needed to be back in Yakima for the Washington State High School Championship @4. Didn't get out of Seattle until 3p, you coasties can keep your crowded freeways.

Happy to report the Ellensburg Bulldogs beat Lake Washington 2-1 for their first state championship in program history. Coached a couple of these boys in Little League so an especially loud shout out to Ceanu Strom and Garrett Hull. Been playing baseball here since the 1891 Ellensburg Deathdealers took the field, and never won a state title until this weekend. Congrats to the Bulldogs, you made us all very proud, and I'll see everyone at the next show:

Actually had a brief conversation (maybe five minutes) with driver/passenger of the vehicle next to me on I5-90 interchange. Two pretty young women were listening to Soundgarden's Louder Than Love. By the time we parted company I could tell you their turn-ons/turn-offs.

The only thing that kept me sane was the F350 in front of me with the Keg-erator in the bed of the truck. I was definitely tempted to get out, and pour myself a tall one. Sorely disappointed I did not have more time, and that I left those baseball collectibles behind only to be stuck in urban Hell.

Took me 15 minutes to get from Downtown to the show in the morning, and a little under two hours (!) to get back in the afternoon. I-5 was choke cars the whole way. Never did figure out why.

Great show.I picked lots of vintage cards and I enjoyed seeing old friends Mark M. Steve Mitchell, Charles C, Brian L, Dave F, Rob A., and meeting Scott Forrest. and David McDonald that was great, oh and Andrew Jerome whom I rarely see any more. The traffic was bad because of the construction on I-5 and the bridge closer on the 520 bridge.

Larry, it was good to meet you as well. Amazing how many Net54 members were at the show - all wonderful people.

Really weird little story - I was talking with someone at the show about Cuban memorabilia and the subject came up about Minnie Minoso signing his name 'Orestes', which I didn't know. Today I received an early 1950's autograph book in the mail that only had 11 autographs, mostly Yankees and Indians, but it has an 'Orestes Minoso'. It was almost unreadable, so that discussion was the only reason I knew who it was.

Default Another great show

Thanks to all those that made Seattle another great time... After traveling there for 26 years, you'd think that I would have figured out the traffic patterns. Well I finally figured it out thanks to Keith. While digging through the closet looking for Zeenuts that haven't been nibbled on by the resident cat and possum, I stumbled upon a full size fire engine revolving light and a blow up doll of Bozo the Clown. Getting around Seattle is much easier traveling in the underused diamond lane, and everyone gets out of your way with a revolving light on top of a dark colored car. It only takes 16 minutes to get from Shoreline to Tacoma, during the morning commute.... Enjoyed the visits with all the collectors, came back a few pounds lighter (material wise at least) and also picked up a few things. See you back there in late October...

Default The 2014 Spring WSSCA Show was one of the best

The 2014 Spring Washington State Sports Collectors Association (WSSCA) show was one of the club's best. Lots of fine vintage material and vintage collectors - though still young at heart. I'm looking forward to the Fall edition.

For those in the Pacific Northwest or vacationing there, plan to set aside a day or two and take in the fall show. Details will be posted (shortly) at: http://www.wsscaseattle.com/

Again, great show! Thanks, guys.

Thanks for the great pictures, Conor. Hey, wait, I think I saw a few cards I want to make an offer on!

This show was the jackpot for me. I actually scored thirty Obaks! Mostly thanks to Scott, but also Mark and Conor.

Scott's girlfriend's nieces (age 10 and 6) stopped by and Rob A. give them each a free T206 common. A nice gesture and I explained to the girls how cool are T206s. The ten year old calculated in her head how long ago was 1909.

After explaining how the cards were sold in packs of cigarettes, I said "Baseball cards have been sold with most everything. Tobacco, gum, toys, underwear, soda pop." The 6 year old said to her sister "Did he say underwear?"

That's true - they were thrilled with those cards and had a lot of fun at the show. It was a real pleasure to be set up next to Rob and Andrew - super nice guys. David, you missed the spaghetti on Sunday - the delicious food was an unexpected bonus.

Default Week!

I cannot believe it's been a week since the show and I haven't had opportunity to share my thanks
Work seems to do that

Anyway, first off, as others have mentioned, the WSSCA show is the best, not due to its size or for the gigantic crowds. It is the best because of the people!

In my experience...The crowd is big enough to let the dealers sell their wares, but not so much as you cannot visit and converse with the dealers and really dig through the stacks of cards. And there are so many great cards!

I try to bring just money with me, but leave with just cards and memories of a good time with the people.

I always enjoy seeing Andrew J., Rob A., Mark M., Mr VG Lyle, Conor, Terry K., Mark C, and Keith behind the tables.
I enjoy visiting with collectors Dave F (my landlord), Rick L, Larry M(oe) and others.
This time I met David (Kawika), Scott F., Luke, Jeff (Bicem) and DRCY for the first time, adding to the list of cool cats I know in the greatest hobby ever.

At the risk of missing someone, let me just say that I thank you *all* for the venue, the opportunity, the conversation, the friendship and the relief from hectic work days!!

WSSCA Forever,

Brian nailed it. The WSSCA show was like a mini-National in a way - great people, great cards - but without the acres of crap and the masses of humanity. It was like a card show in Mayberry. It was nice to meet you in person, Brian. Have "seen" you on the Board since forever. I have swapped Zeenuts on-line with Andrew Jerome and the venerable Larry Moe over the years but had never met either before. Both great guys and was a pleasure to talk story with them at the show. Met the esteemed Mr Cycleback - an urbane and witty fellow; he didn't edit a single thing he said. Got reacquainted with old friends Rob Adesso, Jeff Prizner and Runscott Forrest (who is a laid-back Southern boy in real life, whooda thunk?). Best for last, got to sit at the feet of Drs. Eskenazi and Macrae who know a thing or three about Pacific Coast League baseball. An awesome day!

My only problem is I'm not used to getting up at 5am on a Saturday. I'm much more awake and personable with 8 hours sleep. And to put getting up early in perspective, I'm in West Seattle and Scott picked me up from Tacoma. I was his free assistant, so a ride was the perk. I know I closed one sale, as I assured a board member that a Walter Johnson photo was original.

I learned that Rob has a ton of Pre-War cards. I'd ask Andrew "What are these?" and he'd keep saying "Those are Rob's." And Scott said "Did you see the binders of cards Rob had?"

Interestingly, Rob had an orange T206 Ty Cobb where you could see where the colors were aligned and the top edge was the normal red. Certainly seemed to support that the orange Cobbs aren't mere fading or a light ink batch but a genuine printing press variation. I said "I assume you charge a premium for that," and Rob said "Definitely."

As a non-active collector or buyer, I thought there was a lot of interesting and varied vintage stuff at the show, Pre-War to 1980s. There was modern and the often Net-54 derided "shiny stuff" but it was majority older stuff. For the record, I'm not against "shiny stuff." It's definitely a show collectors should visit.

The nieces even gave me a tour of the facilities, because that's where they go to school during the week. The youngest one informed me the show took place where she eats lunch.

Those pictures are great And I'm in one of them! It was a great show. I had fun meeting Brian, Dave F. and Dave E. and talking more with Rob and Scott who are both awesome. Always fun to hear some stories and learn something from Mark M. as well.

So you're saying you're even more urbane and witty on a good night's rest. Chicks must follow you around with mattresses on their backs. Why waste time at a card show?

David...I wish I could say that I was delivering a dissertation, but you caught me seconds after Andrew had flung that ghost pepper into my mouth.... Agree with all the thoughts that you don't need 600 tables on 6 acres, along with 13,000 freeloaders stampeding to the corporate booths at the opening bell to make a good show. This one is like Goldilocks' third bowl....JUST RIGHT....

Mark: I have met you now at three Nationals and the WSSCA show and you have never not been brilliant. I am confident that I speak for a lot of people here that we are deeply grateful for your devotion to baseball history and your generosity in sharing it with us in such an articulate way. We are so much richer for it. Now get off the internet and go write those books.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Yeah, you can see your back side, from top to bottom, and at the next table over, part of David R's head and me discoursing with a potential customer. Also, that's my backdrop display behind Rob, with the T3 Speaker, B18 Johnson, etc., designed by me and the guys at Lowe's especially for the show

People also learned that if you don't get him going on the subject of "the morons on Net54" Scott's very personable in person. The local source of Southern hospitality. For the record, he means the very few who do such things as a post defenses of shilling and other illegal practices as positive things, not someone who would claim the '61 Topps is the best looking Topps set.
