There was a time when this was one hot card. a twenty spot and $15 for an auto is where you're at today. How the mighty have fallen, both icons and cards.

Got a nice price on this one. It's the first Gold Refractor in my collection. Hopefully he has a good year for the Tribe...

i like the carlos santana, might have to find one.

almost spring training so added some more baseball. this autograph collecting has gotten way more out of hand than i imagined. my first '89 score signed, always thought the set had great color as a kid. also the strasburg is one of those shiny refractory card that the prewar people love to make fun of.

nice pick's. Definitely love the Stras...

I can definitely agree that the AUTO bug can get out of hand from time to time..

Update: Coincidentally, I just landed the same Kershaw today. Can't say I care a whole lot for the sticker though..

Default '93 Finest Refractor

Just picked up this Hershiser to complete my Dodgers Team Set. I have the entire set (with the exception of this one) graded out at psa9's. Hopefully this one gets at least an 8. '93 Refractors were apparently limited to a print run of 241. For whatever reason the Hershiser is one of the harder ones to get and I had to overpay a little to get this one but I'm happy.

Now if I can only find the '94 Hershiser Refractor or the '95 Piazza refractor.

were '93 the first year of the refractors? i stopped buying packs after '91. i remember watching late night hsn and don west was screaming about the donruss elite dominators and the limited autograph cards. those were cool!

you are correct, '93 was the first year they produced them and Topps Finest was the set they chose to use.

Hello, this is my first post here. I mainly collect 19th century baseball and prewar hockey, but I like modern Bowman Chrome autos as well. My goal is to collect one BC auto of every "star"

The Chrome Harper is going for about $275-300 raw right now. That's the next card I'm going to be buying.

Welcome to the forum, Coninefan.

That's a lofty goal. You're going to spend a bloody fortune on those. But the Harper and Giancarlo Stanton cards are a nice start.

Certain cards right now are really on fire, and I can't tell you which way they're going to go. For instance, the 2009 Chrome Mike Trout auto is way up there. It was as high as $500 a couple of weeks ago, and it looks like the last one sold for $400. I got mine last year before the season started for $99. It might come down, but if keeps hitting the way he did his rookie season, it might go up more.

Some guys you might want to consider buying now before they become stars:

2012 Bowman Chrome Oscar Taveras auto (tough to find a really clean auto. I got lucky)
2012 Bowman Chrome Nick Castellanos auto
2012 Bowman Chrome Wil Myers auto
2010 Bowman Chrome Manny Machado auto
2011 Bowman Chrome Jurickson Profar auto
2008 Bowman Chrome Jesus Montero auto

There are plenty of others, those are some nice ones to start with.

Other players that are more established, but should continue to go up in price (in other words, get them now):

2008 Buster Posey BC auto
2008 Jason Heyward BC auto

Others, like the 2005 Bowman Chrome Matt Kemp auto will be more affordable after his injury riddled 2012 season. He should bounce back and put up big numbers, and then his cards will jump back up.

The 2005 Bowman Chrome Ryan Braun auto should be affordable right now, too, because of the steroid rumors. Now is a good time to buy, as the cards will go back up once the season starts. He's a perennial MVP candidate.

Other really nice BC autos:

2002 Joe Mauer auto
2006 Clayton Kershaw auto (a personal favorite in my collection)
2004 Felix Hernandez auto

The biggest of them all, of course, is the 2001 Albert Pujols. That one is several thousand.

Have fun!!!

Here's the list of cards I'm chasing:

2001: Pujols
2002: Wright, Mauer
2003: Hanley, McCann, Youk, Markakis
2004: Felix, Gio
2005: Verlander, Kemp, Butler, Zimm, Weaver, Ellsbury, Braun
2006: Longo, Kershaw, Gordon, Upton, Lester
2007: Lincecum
2008: Stanton, Posey
2009: Trout
2010: Strasburg
2011: Harper, Machado (if he has a good season)
2012: no one yet

I'm gonna hold off on Taveras/Zunino/Bundy etc. For every Trout, there are a ton of Delmon Youngs. I'd rather pay $200 when a player becomes a star than $100 now. I've gotten burned too many times.

I didn't include 2nd year guys like Heyward, Starlin, Price, etc yet. I'll pick them up eventually.

The biggest problem is Pujols. Not the cost, but finding one for a decent price. I'll only buy a PSA/SGC 9, and I won't pay more than $3800. I have a Trout and a Kershaw incoming

For your 2006 set, I'd put Prince Fielder ahead of Lester.

there's a guy on blowout selling a bgs 9 pujols to put toward a new car, you might want to contact him. i agree there are alot more delmon youngs than mike trout. personally i would sell the trout right now, he's most likely not gonna replicate last year so his stuff will go down as the season wears on. such a crapshoot and lots of speculating with the new cards tho, one aspect i hate about modern stuff.

I know they were both in the '02 UD Prospect Premieres set. I think prince had a certified auto in that set. I also think Prince had ML cards in '05, didn't he? So '06 really isn't a rookie. Even if you play the XRC game..

Do you have a link to the thread?

Here's my newest pickup

I traded it straight up for a 2012 Bowman Chrome Draft Kyle Zimmer Orange Refractor auto that I pulled from a single pack. So the Trout basically cost me $3.

I'm sure Zimmer will go on to win 6 Cy Youngs and Trout will get popped for steroids after blowing out his knee. That's my luck with prospects

I already have an '06 BC Fielder. I'm not sure whether to add it to my list or not

He has a Prospect Premiere auto from '02 and numerous "rookie" autos from 2005. I don't think any are on-card though

Picked up another BC auto. Not my scan, but the same card. It's numbered to 99

No.

Now that you mention buybacks though. As far as the Chrome AUTO rookies that you're looking to put together. Have you checked into the 2006 Bowman Originals Buyback AUTOs. I haven't really looked into them myself, but I do know that they did use a few Chrome rookies.. Swisher isn't necessarily a superstar, but I know for sure that they used some of the 2002 Chromes for him. As well as the 2005 Bowman Chrome Melky Cabrera...So I guess there's a chance that maybe there were a few more notables..

say no to the bowman buybacks, they're mostly fakes or you can't really know 100% either way.

Really? I was referring to the sealed and numbered ones. Has there been an issue with them that I'm unaware of? Personally, I don't have any of them, but a few have caught my eye lately. I just haven't pulled the trigger.
