Default 1933 Goudey real or fake?

I was considering this card, as buyer states authenticity, but I see no guarantee listed. Any opinions? Im new to this board I hope questions like this are acceptable.

It's a terrible picture with too much light reflecting off it but it doesn't give me that warm fuzzy feeling. I would say you are buying it at some risk. Can't say with certainty it's a fake- it looks faded but it may be that flashbulb. I missed your picture of the back, but now that I see it, colors are wrong. Ink shouldn't be that bright. Looks like a fake.

I agree with Dennis and Barry. The first thing that jumped out at me was the sea-monster green ink on the reverse. And as Barry said, there should be little to no reflection from a camera flash on a real Goudey.

The picture looks cropped on the front. Not enough space between his hat & the top border, & the mound looks too close to the right border. Also, the back print is too close to the top, for a card that does not appear miscut. Furthermore, whenever a seller says that he took it to a couple local dealers who thought it was real, that usually means its fake

Have you actually touched / held this card, or just looked at an image that was emailed??

I think the card is a worn reprint, but am not certain. The ink color on the back doesn't look correct. A 33 Goudey with that much wear shouldn't have such a smooth reflective front.

I think that once the card was in hand, and hit with a black light for a moment, then you'd be in a better position to tell. How far from the card are you? Might be worth a drive of an hour or two if the price is right.

Frank.

Poor quality scans and all... These guys nailed it. Another key, there is excessive wear between "Goudey Gum Co, and Boston" normally where the reprint stamp would be on some fakes. RUN, it's a reprint. To be certain, check the guy's feedback and selling habits, then go with your instinct.

When it's over, please post the auction in this thread.

Why not post the auction now? It's not like anyone here is seriously considering it!
Now, if it was a real Ruth #181.....

Go to Yahoo auctions right now and you can see several fake 33 Ruths, along with the fake T206 Cobbs, Namath Rookes, Jordan Rookes, and just about any other high end fake cards. There are a few reputable dealers in the pre 1950's section of Yahoo, such as KenKeller and Mike Wheat, but many of the dealers are selling counterfeits. Yahoo doesn't seem to care, and allows these items to stay on even when complaints are filed.

Thanks to a few hard lessons learned, and the great expertise that is available on this board, I am not falling for these scams, but I am concerned about the people who are placing bids on these items. I go to Yahoo auctions ocassionally just to laugh at some of the scam auctions.

Rick

So, Dylan11: questions like this are acceptable. We do not want you to be taken. In general the theory is: if a high value card is ungraded, the seller becomes a focus for a potential buyer who can not recognize every fake.

If you avoid most hazardous situations which are easy to identify, you minimize the liklihood of becoming a victim. If you insist in bargain hunting, before you are sufficiently knowledgable, you will get burned.

2 easy places to tell

Top of head is too close to top border
"G" in "George" is to close to left border

I was pretty sure it was fake due to coloring, but also placement of Ruth and his name are very suspect as well. I would never purchase a goudey ruth ungraded without knowing its a reputable dealer with a guarantee to grade. Thanks for all the input though. So many people get burned daily on these worn out reprints on ebay and other auction sites
