Default My Chase obsession......and what's yours ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

The very 1st T206 that I acquired was this blue Chase back in 1981 when I first started collecting this set.
As a kid I remember reading that as a 1st baseman he would hustle to cover bunts down the 3rd baseline,
and throw the batter out.
This really impressed me as a kid, so he was my "Highlander Hero".

So, one would say I have become obsessed with collecting his T206 cards. And, that's what is great about
these T206's....as you can try for all the various Tobacco brands. Furthermore, this Chase card happens to
be one of the six "super-prints" in the set that were printed with almost every back in the 350/460 Series.

I still need American Beauty 460....Carolina Brights....El Principe De Gales....Lenox....Red Hindu and a Drum.
The card depicted here is a Piedmont 350 and it would be nice to also find a Piedmont 460 Fac 42.

I've included Chase's 460 Series card (trophy) to make a point....at the end of the 1910 season Chase became
the Manager of the NY Highlanders and I think that could be why the T206 guys printed a 5th card of him.

So, what card (or cards) are you guys obsessed over....?

They're not vintage, but I collect everything that pictures Tom Seaver. Here are a few of the more unusual ones.

Ted, Chase is my obsession as well -- I always knew you were smarter than the average bear. Here are some that you missed:

Oh, and Ted, for good measure, you'd appreciate this:

Ah, those Seaver Candy Lids match my wantlist! Still, my obsession is Brooklyn Dodgers cards, despite having been born four years after they departed the borough of churches.

Other than Chase, my obsessions are Cobb and Mathewson but Chase takes the cake. As a criminal lawyer, I truly appreciate one of the most interesting criminals in major league baseball....

Ted,
I didn't know you were such a fan of Prince Hal. I have Chase (Trophy) with Piedmont Factory 42, but not Chase (Blue). If you're interested send me an email.

"Great minds think alike"......

Anyhow, actually I concentrate on the blue Chase....it must have something to do with the
"1st set, or 1st card syndrome" where you to keep re-experiencing the novelty by acquiring
the same card over and over again. And, with the T206's you can do this without being ac-
cused of some "insane" compulsion or that nasty habit....."hoarding".

But, I like you reperatoire, show us some more. Actually, my 2nd favorite is the Pink Chase,
I have several examples of this card.

This Thread is not strictly a Hal Chase posting.....any card or player that collectors accumulate
many of is fair game.

Now tell me what issue is your Chase card from ?

I don't go out of my way to collect just Mathewson cards, but if I can find one cheap, i'll go after it. The e98 Mathewson is my favourite pre war caramel card, so i'd like to get one of every colour. I have one e98 Mathewson and getting another shortly, one t206 portrait and one t205. I'm also trying to collect some Cobb cards, but all I have is one t206 Cobb.

TRex,

I must admit that i have prized the Chase cards from the beginning of my collecting days.
I have the Trophy with the AB 460 (my only AB 460); the Blue Pied 350;
the Pink Pied 150; the dark cap Pied 350-460; and the white cap Pied 150.
I must admit that my real obsession right now is reaching 500 206s and
I'm ten away!

all the best, Ted

as many of you know my "obsession" is simply the T206 set...but my favorite player...? you guessed it, Prince Hal. one of my first T206 cards that i bought, was chase, dark cap, from none other than Jay Wolt, about 15 years ago, when he had his shop in P-burg, NJ (Hi Jay)...

over the years i have owned many chase cards, my favorite is his blue portrait.

Thinking about it some more and looking over my collection... Team cards should have been at the top of my list (images at the bottom of the page)....

"Baseball!

A man...
A man stands alone at the plate. This is the time for what?

For individual achievement.

There he stands alone. But in the field, what?

Part of a team.

Teamwork...
Looks, throws, catches, hustles. Part of one big team.

Bats himself the live-long day, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and so on.

lf his team don't field...what is he?

You follow me?

No one.

Sunny day, the stands are full of fans. What does he have to say?.

l'm goin' out there for myself.

But...l get nowhere unless the team wins.

- Team!
- Team."

its matty, cobby, and Big Train.

Embarrasingly - I have no Big Train cards to show (wow thats bad). That is not because he is lower ranked on my list... I just seem to be more picky with his stuff.

I have a bunch more as part of team cards for these players -
but here are my individual cards.

Its a meager collection - but you have to start somewhere -

guys (and girls)- i am fascinated to see some of you collect several examples of the same exact card...why not just keep the cleanest/best example only? why multiples of the same card?

looking forward to hearing some answers...

There are several responses to your "?"......

1st....I gave you a very good reason for my multi T206 Chase's.....and that is I enjoy collecting the
different Tobacco brands.

2nd....Many of us keep upgrading the same card, and in the process we have a few extras, that at
the right time we will trade or sell off. Unless, of course, you are a "hoarder" of cards. I was always
say....if you accumulate 5 cards of the same card....you are, perhaps an investor. And, if you have
up to 10 cards of the same card, then you are a "hoarder".

There is many ways of collecting and it's all very personal.

ted- i understand the whole "different back" theory, i guess i was specifically noticing Ray with his '34 Goudey Nelson's and was interested in that mostly, sorry i didn't specify...

and of course (obviosuly) there are so many ways of collecting and it is truly a personal thing...was just an innocent question.

p.s. also at first glance i thought Dan's Cobbs were all the same too, but upon closer inspection, they are different...

Joe:

My favorite is probably the Tip Top Bread. I recently picked up the E103 and the more I look at it, the more I like it. Prior to owning it, I really had very little appreciation for the E103 Wagner. The red color was so overwhelming that it took away form his image (at least I used to believe that). Now, it is easily my second favorite...at least of the ones I own...and may surpass the Tip Top at some point.

Are you referring to the 1947 TIP-TOP Bread issue ?

It is a very unappreciated and very difficult B/W set to complete.

I gave up on it several years back and traded off most my cards....but,
I kept all my Yankees cards.

I wasn't thinking Vintage.....I only have one D322, a beat-up Tom Leach.

I would like to get a reasonable (condition & price) Babe Adams.

I have a type set of pitchers who won 3 games in a World Series.

MVSNYC,

I collect the 1934 Goudey Nelson card for many reasons...

At one time I just happened to have two of them, and thought they looked really cool together, so I pick them up for cheap when I can. I'm not a big fan of the '34 Goudey set in general, but the reason I really like this card is because it's the first card I ever saw where the back mentioned Fargo, ND (which is where I consider "home"). Lynn Nelson wasn't born in Fargo, though. He was born about sixty miles away in a tiny town called Sheldon, ND. A little added note - his 1939 Play Ball card says he was born in Fargo, NC (which is halfway across the country if there even is a Fargo, NC).

This card was the first one that made me do a lot of research on an old ball player, so I like to pick it up when I can, because it reminds me of how many stories surround cards and the players on them.

A little history on Nelson: is one of the few players from North Dakota that played pre-war ball. He also has very few cards (I think about ten or less, and I like the '34 Goudey the best). His story is also very interesting: He was a pretty bad pitcher. He was nicknamed "Line Drive Nelson," probably because he gave up too many good hits. But he was a real decent hitter, and they called upon him to pinch hit often. So maybe he was called Line Drive because he could hit - who knows. He also went on to become a por wrestler named the Masked Marvel.

I generally try not to spend more than $20 or so on them, so I definitely am not an "investor" as was mentioned before (this card is so common and available, it'd take me ten years to even make a dent in cornering the market on this card). I guess I'd consider myself a "hoarder" even though I probably won't have ten of his cards by the end of the year. Just another baseball card obsession I guess.

So long story short I like multiples of the card for three main reasons
1-It reminds me of why I collect - the great stories behind the cards and the players on them
2-It reminds me of home
3-They look really cool together

That sure is a sweet looking 1915 CJ of our guy.

Here are my various PINK Chase's. As much as I really love the BLUE Chase for reason's I noted, the Pink version
is such a clearer picture of him.

But, the Pink one does not provide the challenge the Blue one does, as the Pink one is just in the 150/350 Series.

Incidently, your EPDG is only the 2nd Pink one I've seen with this back.

I was walking out of the National, on the last day, about 4 years ago and looked down at John Billingsly's table and saw this. I asked how much. He said something like $250....I asked if he could do any better....he said $180 for me.....I said ok.....

I have several Cobb's from various sets and the only Cobb that appeals to me is his T206 Green.
These place 3rd in my favorites department.

I must say, Chase cards are in 2nd place next to Mr Johnson (this is the nicest one I have seen and
grades a "10" (front-wise), but a faint smudge on the back diminishes it to this grade. I should free it,
let it breathe a while, and re-submit it.

Really nice Chase....one I don't have.

And, John Billingsley is one of the best. John and I have "wheeled-n-dealed" for over 16 years.
And, a fine Texan, too.

Well after reading Mr. James' comments about Ed in his first Historical Baseball Abstract, I became fascinated with Ed. I found an article about him in a 1915 Baseball Magazine, and I'll mail a copy to folks who're sincerely interested in Ed. After reading it, it seems that baseball management and ownership were down on him for organizing players against the owners. But for that, he'd have played a few more years, I think, would have pitched a bit more the last few years he played, and he would be in the Hall now. Before anyone takes exception to that, go read Bill James' words about Ed.

ooops. Forgot this little guy. Noticed him when I was putting the T222 and Dietsche post card away...
