Default E107 Wagner - a site to behold

Posted By: Bill Kasel

Nothing like a newfound Wagner to bring a smile to your face....I would have to imagine that the number of E107's is significantly less than the T206 right? That Sotheby's estimate seems REALLY low for the player and the grade.

I dunno Bill. I can't get that OJ Dailey out of my mind. Im liking it better than any Wagner or Jackson. And who is Dailey?

Is it some one armed guy? Does that Dailey exist?

Oh yeah, yes the Wagner is a sight to behold.

I was going as high as 11K, just to make sure I pass the reserve. Should I assume it's a lock?

I think you are in good shape Barry. Keep in mind though, that after you add the 20% buyer's premium, the card will actually cost you $13,200. I hope you still want the E107 Wagner at that level.

You are right Wesley, I forgot all about the 20%. Better cancel my bid. It will be fascinating to see what new records will be shattered for E107 at the sale. And I'm sure the Wagner will lead the way.

To answer the original questions, there are fewer than 10 E107 Wagners known, so it is SIGNIFICANTLY MORE RARE than the T206. The hobby buzz (which I agree with) is pegging the E107 Wagner to break 6 figures in the Sotheby's auction.

Those estimates are amusing, but keep me interested hoping the hobby world sleeps during that time as I dream about the Delahanty Type II and the Chesbro. Reality has it that I won't have a sniff in the long run. I would be surprised if it didn't touch the six figure mark.

It is not like Sotheby's is conservative with all of their estimates: they have the DiMaggio jersey estimated at $600,000 plus.

Whoever is their "card expert" sure does not know too much. I can see being off by a little, but for them to estimate this card at LESS than a 1933 Goudey #181 Ruth in 8 or a N300 Nichols in 8, or the same as a 1963 Mantle in 10 is insane.

Luckily for the consignor (hopefully they did not sell them outright) they E107 cards will find their proper level.

My understanding is the estimate is a function of reserves. In some states, the consignor may bid up to a certain amount. That amount is connected to the estimate if memory serves...

I think the reason the estimates on the E107 are so low is that the group originated outside the hobby from a noncollector, and I am certain he does not want to get them back. He will be happy to get what the market will bear. That is an ideal situation for Sotheby's; it guarantees everything will sell and they will be able to attain numbers many multiples their high end estimates. That is an important goal for them, since it is a yardstick they use to report the success of the sale.

Do you think if I sent them an email with an offer well over the high estimate that they will end the auction early?
