Default Circa 1890's team photo - Need help identifying players

Posted By: Tony Andrea

Just purchased a circa 1890's old baseball team photo and need some help.
The seller states that two of the players in the picture are well known players from that era.
Dirty Jack Doyle & HOF 1st baseman Roger Connor.
Please see bottom row last two players on the right.
Doyle, (if it's him) would be the player with his right arm resting on his right knee,
and Connor, (if it's him) would be the player with bat leaning on his leg with his arms crossed.
Doyle did play for the Columbus Soloms and the photo originates from Dublin Ohio.
Written on the back is "Charles Fay Leppert, Dublin, Ohio.
Do any of these players look familiar to anyone and do you think the sellers story holds water?
Regardless, it's a neat photo. I enlarged the photo in the 2nd pic for close ups of the players.
Dan Bretta, where are you??

Tony

Hi Tony- while the player on the lower right looks like Connor, I would say it's pretty iffy. I wouldn't pay a big premium on that basis, because it's likely wrong. And I don't know what Doyle looks like, sorry.

Town team photo with neither of those players pictured. The gloves would make this a circa 1890 photo and by that time Connor would not be playing on a town team like this. Nice equipment images.

Looks like them, but photos like these without provenance are tough to tell...like Barry has said many times everyone looks like someone in these 19th century photos.

Jack Doyle

Roger Conner

Isn't the guy a bit skinny to be Connor?

Looks like his cheekbones are too high to be Connor as well..the other guy looks an awful lot like Doyle though, but without provenance too iffy.

I'm always suspicious of this kind of photo identification. It's usually done by a seller who thinks he has made a great find and wants to capitalize on it. I stay away from these photos as a matter of principle (unless they are being sold as a generic town team).

Thanks to all who chimed in. I didn't purchase the photo because of who might have been in it
and I definitely didn't over pay. I just thought the image was pretty neat and thought it would
make a nice framed piece for my office and thats exactly what it is.
I could look at images like this all day long. No steroids in those bodies, huh?
