Default Help in identifying players-San Leandro CA winter league 1947

Posted By: Ed McCollum

I work with a woman whose father played and managed minor league baseball his whole life. He passed away about two years ago, and she is now going through all the stuff he accumulated over his career. One of the things she came back with this weekend is a photo from the San Leandro CA winter league in 1947, which shows her father (Frank Benites; seventh from left; back row) among the entire team. One of his team mates is Billy Martin (seventh from left; front row), who was working his way up through the Yankee organization at the time.

Would anyone be able to help identify any of the other players in the photo? Her father had only marked Martin and the manager (simply as Mongo) and she would love to know the names of some of the others in the shot. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ed

Default Help in identifying players-San Leandro CA winter league 1947

Did a little quick searching on the internet.

Rogers Clothiers was a team in the Alameda AA League. Some other teams were Alameda Merchants, Kenealy Yankees, E. Bercovich & Son and Ben's Golden Glows. Lots of major leaguers and PCLers played in the league like Joe Hatten, Ferris Fain, Eddie Lake.

A Frank Benites played catcher for the San Leandro Sicks Beer team in 1946, for Muskogee in 1947 and the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League in 1948.

Some articles with Frank Benites being mentioned:

Oakland Tribune February 26,1946
STRADER SEEKS STARS
Hal Eckardt, shortstop, Frank Benites, catcher, and Ed Mallerich, pitcher, are being sought by "Red" Strader and Harry Green for Modesto in the California State League.

Oakland Tribune April 23, 1946
Gordon Realtors from San Francisco nosed out San Leandro Sick's Beer 7-6. Jack Faszholz was on the mound for the realtors and Perry did the catching. Beebe and Galleria divided mound work for San Leandro, Frank Benites caught. Phillips tabbed a single and double and Benites, with a timely hit, drove in a run to tie the score in the eighth.

Oakland Tribune May 14,1946
With Arlett, Beebe, Machedo and Gerner furnishing the power with two hits each, San Leandro Sicks Beer beat San Jose, 6-1. Cooper,Nicholas and Benites worked for the Beers. Rodrigues and Stanley for San Jose.

Bercovich Tops Alameda Loop
By ABT MACY
E. Bercovich & Son, first half winner of the Alameda AA City League, is well on its way toward taking second round honors. The Furniture tossers nosed out Roger's Clothiers, 2-1, over the week-end to take a handy lead in the loop's second round, which has two games remaining on the slate. Jack Faszholz went the route for Bercovich and Ed Botelho tossed out three runners trying to steal as well as hitting a double and single. Al Lawrence rapped four for four and Jim Dix hit two. Ivaldi, for the Clothiers, leveled on two including a double.

BUCKHORNS TRIUMPH
Buckhorn club whipped Clubhouse, 7-3, with Monahan and Albright opposing Nicols and Benites. Pat Ambrose turned in some fine plays at third base and hit three.
Pries and Serena each hit three. One of Pries' came with the bases loaded. Serena clouted one for the circuit and Clem Cola tripled. Rose, for the losers, homered and Benites doubled.
Will Hafey spaced 10 hits to give Maritime Service a 4-3 win over Ben's Golden Glow. John Ward and Jim Stanton hit two apiece and Gilmore, Vezehch, Eddie and Lyle Lake hit two each for the Glows. Lyle doubled twice.

Default Help in identifying players-San Leandro CA winter league 1947

I couldn't help but notice the name "Arlett" in one of the news accounts. Buzz Arlett, one of greatest of all Pacific Coast League players, was born very close to San Leandro in Elmhurst and would have been 47 at the time ...

In another article, they give Arlett's first name as Neal. They also list another Benites named Augie, a shortstop.

In San Leandro, the guy with the most information about the Winter League is Mark McRae, he posts on this board once in a while. Send him an e-mail, he may have interesting information. Mark had a great show today.

I also met Chris Counts for the first time at the show.
