Default SCD lookup plz. M114 Black Sox

I have an 1917 Baseball magazine premium (M114) Chicago, that is not listed in either my '06 nor '07 catalogs. '17 team Bosox and NYG only.

Could a nice fellow, with a later issue help a brother out please? Steve

Default 2009

In the 2009 edition it's not listed as 1917. The next previous year to list Chicago was 1915 and the post-1917 year would be 1919 (White Sox). Those are the 2 yrs, front and back, that are listed in the 2009 SCD. I am waiting for the 2011 to get a new book and don't have 2010. regards

changed 1914 to 1915 as there is a 1915 Chicago White Sox listed

I have a pic over in the Memo side, in Jimmy's Premiums thread. Sorry, on an iPod and my photo skills sox on this gizmo.

This M114 is labeled "World's Champs". Going by that roster, it would be 1917.

Leon, Thanks for taking the time to look. That thing is a beast!

I believe that the SCD book may have mistakenly listed the White Sox as Red Sox for 1917. Can anyone confirm the existance of the Red Sox for 1917?

Hello Steve,
Sorry, I can't give you a definitive answer. The Baseball Magazine posters checklist in the Standard Catalog has been there probably since the first edition and I don't recall any additions, corrections, etc., to it, at least not in the past 10 years.

It may well be that, as suggested here, the listing of a 1917 Red Sox poster is in error, but since I have no idea where the checklist originated, I can't verify that one way or the other.

Phil, It would make sense that the two 1917 teams were theor League's champs, Black Sox and the Giants. FWIW, never seen the Red Sox team either, and Ive always been in that hunt.

Okay Bob, Ya think the Chicago one can be added to the list while keeping the Boston (until a definitive answer)?

Thanks, Steve F

Years ago I had access to about 500+ different Baseball Magazines. I made copies of the ads that listed the premiums. A pretty astute collector who's since passed away, one who knew his M113s and M114s, assured me that a few that were listed in the ads never were available. At any rate, what I'd planned to do with the ads was tabulate the various premiums and when the were listed in the ads... I shelved that project when The Standard Catalog came out with their listing. I now need to find that old box. That White Sox team may well depict the 1917 Champions, but it might not have been available until 1918.

Frank's theory has possibilities, but currently the catalog's checklist shows only one piece for 1918 -- Home Run Baker.

I'd be hesitant to change the checklist unless or until ads can be found offering the 1917 White Sox premium; then we'd list it be the date of the ad.

Amazing piece, and "Any 25 posters for $2.00!", "...we have sold 2 1/2 million in the last few years -that is why we can make the price so low."

I believe it reads 1916 Red Sox. Man, I would kill for that one.

Default bbm date

On the back bottom right of the sheet, I do not have the magazine, it has
Baseball 10 - 19 printed. Below that is the page number [369]. Otherwise, there are no other dates or margin numbers shown on front or back. Page [370] is of the ad page.

Default premium date listing

Found an issue of baseball magazine on-line that shows the White Sox premium being advertised, the exact same one as mine and Steve's. Go to
http://www.la84foundation.org/5va/ba...zine_frmst.htm.
From here:
use the LA84 Foundation Search page
in KEYWORD - use the word ADS
in year - use 1919
under magazine - use baseball magazine
search LA84
when list comes up, click on [PDF] ads advertisements The American Tobacco Co. EI du Pont de Nemours ...
Baseball Magazine, 1919, Vol. 23, Iss. 1.
then on page 6 of the list, you should see the same ad.
Haven't searched any other 1919 issues, but at least it is here. This ad may have run through several issues.
Let me know if you had any problems getting to the page. good luck,
jim

Thanks for the work Jim.

Could you possibly post a shot of your 1917 CWS team?
