Default Shipping increase after auction closes

Just won an auction for a SP variation David Ortiz 2017 Topps for opening bid for a very low price, and within minutes of the end of the auction, the seller jacked the shipping cost by $40, explaining he couldn't sell it for that low and he thought he had put a reserve on it.
I'm guessing I have to wait three days before opening a case with eBay, right, and then nothing much will happen? Surely won't ever see the card arrive in the mail...

Umm..i didn't think you could do revisions on Ebay within a certain time period. Also, if you had a bid, then for sure he should not be able to change it.

He was able to up the shipping cost from $4.88 to $44.88, sending a note along with it:

"Sorry, I thought I had a reserve on this card, there's no way I can sell it for as low as it went , I sent this , this is the lowest I would take for it. Sorry for the inconveniences."

ok. Was this from a Invoice from the seller....or the You won item from Ebay invoice??
Then, the seller could make/add charges, such as adding sales tax and insurance (as long it was stated) on their invoice.
I would just move on and forget this guy.

I assume this is the listing/guy...and he has it relisted at a much higher price now.

You will never get the cards.....I would report to ebay (via phone call) to avoid a NPB claim. Hopefully ebay will take action against him, or at least advise you as to the best course of action. Then time to neg this newb.

That's the card. He actually also sent a message saying he'd put the shipping back to the original, but then relisted it. What an adventure.

And sorry that I put this in the wrong section, meant to post in modern.

Giving eBay a call now!

That's the plan! But yeah, I'll never see those cards beyond the relisted auction...

I've never been through a process like this with eBay, but a question: would it have been better for me to have paid immediately (without getting the invoice), or would it not have mattered in the long run?

I normally pay within minutes of winning an auction for single cards. Invoices only matter when it comes to combining shipping, IMO.

That was my plan, but I was looking up my eBay Bucks redemption code and he jacked up the shipping before I got to the checkout.

Yeah, give him a negative and call eBay if necessary. Forward them his message to you about not being able to sell the card that cheap.

He actually invoiced me for the auction I won and said he'd ship it, so we'll see. I had sent him a note telling him to send the invoice or to cancel the sale, also noting that while the sale was low for the card, he'd probably lose more money by getting the negative feedback and bad word of mouth. I also noted how I bet the relisted item had a lot of views because I had posted on a forum about it, so thanks, guys!

Of course, to be determined if he actually ships the card...

You're definitely in the right, but it looks like this unethical dealer wasn't ever going to send you the card regardless. So you're probably better off not to have ever sent this idiot money.

Op-
Make sure you open the box at the post office in front of the clerk there.
People do tend to ship an empty box.
Because it shows shipped, they are off the hook. You need proof!!!!!
Don't fall for this trick or for a different item.

I'm totally expecting some shenanigans with this.

The package was accepted at USPS five days ago and is expected to be delivered tomorrow. I was planning on opening it up on video, as I don't think I'll need to sign for it and it will likely just be left at my house. Is video enough, or should I find some other way of having it witnessed?

Not sure, as I never had this issue.
I personally would open it in front of the postmaster, since your expecting fradualent activity and tell them that. And if so, then you have a witness and get written proof from him.
Not sure how a video works out. but should be o.k.

I guess it might be a Karma thing.
The question is now on you--- What kind of feedback do you leave???

That is the $64,000 Question, right? It ended up with the positive result I wanted, but the journey to get there was a negative. I haven't dished out negative feedback that much at all, and am not sure it is ENTIRELY warranted here, but a positive feedback is surely not ENTIRELY warranted either. I guess I'm leaning toward abstaining at this point...

IMO, this transaction is a great candidate for no feedback.....keep the clown thinking about it for 2 months....
