Default Blank back T206

Posted By: Sean

Howdy,
Are there T206 blank backed cards? I would guess some are proofs or just skinned, but I was looking at the T206 museum and they only had it listed in the backs listed by scarcity section.

I'm sure somebody here has some information

Thanks! Sean BH

I have one and it is neither a proof, nor skinned. They are out there, but are pretty tough to find. I don't know what T206 museum says, but my off-the-cuff guess is that they are about as tough as the Lenox back, maybe tougher judging by the frequency with which I have seen them. Others may have different opinions.

Our friend SlantyCouch ranks it up there with Black Lenox:

Andy,
Now that I think about it, I think they are tougher than Lenox. I have only seen 4 or 5 offered in the last 10 years or so. I have probably seen 20-30 Lenox backed cards.

That guy JWolf is buying a lot of big dollar cards and must by snipping them with extremly high ammounts. Check what he has won in the past couple of months and you will see what I am talking about. Maybe he hit the lotto. Rob

How can the blank backs be anything but printers scrap that was cut decent. If they are legit how were they distributed.

In my 5 years on ebay I have seen maybe 10 for sale. I just can't see that they are anything more than printers scrap and not a legit back variation.

Just my opinion,

Lee

It is certainly possible that they were "printer's scrap". It is also possible that they were accidentally inserted in packs before the back ads were printed on them. We will never know. Either way, I think they are cool.

Presumably, they are printing errors as opposed to advertising 'Polar Bear in a Snow Storm' brand tobacco. However, it is possible for blank backs to be distributed with the product. I've pulled a blank back card from a 1980s Topps pack, and I'm sure others have too. Whether the T206s are factory cut or scissors cut helps answer the question. A card inserted into the produce will likely factory cut (which doesn't mean all factory cuts were inserted into packs).

I guess the seller purchased it from a Mastro auction a few years ago, he had them sent into PSA but they were returned because of the back.
I looked around and it seems that most blank backs actually have ghost prints, making me assume that two sheets were stuck together when they were cut? The other blank backs with no ghost print had the printer/cutting crosshairs.

printer's scap is a possibility. the idea of sheets being stuck together, interesting......i don't know.

either way they are scarce, i have only seen a few in the last 5 years.

the link to the ebay acution above gives me some thoughts....
1. the card looks a bit oversized to me.
2. that's probably (from the scan) the nicest blank back i have ever seen.
3. with the condition being so nice, i'm surprised that there were only three bids above $310. and only two bids above $450. cheap imo.

I bet it would have gone for more if it were graded, especially being a Southern Leaguer.

I've a blank back Oakes which is actually in pretty nice shape, which for me is about vg or vg/ex. There is no ghost image on back and it definately has been hand cut. I didn't think it a big deal when I got it but I've not seen many since.

I know someone who has experimented at length with T-206s and basically was able to create a blank front example. There is the potential that some blank backs out there have simply been funked with.
