E92 Dockman (series of 50). Could also be Croft's Cocoa.

My guess is either a Dockman or an E101. I happen to believe that they are pretty much one and the same - my theory is that the Dockmans were printed first, and then when they were a hit the manufacturer of the cards doctored the back to take off the Dockman name, added another ten players and printed up the E101s as samples to show to other candy companies, who bought the cards but opted instead for their own designs (Nadja, C&A, Crofts cocoa) on the backs. But I admit that my theory doesn't explain the 12 St. Louis Nadjas. And of course, it could have happened the other way around, i.e. the E101s were printed first as samples, and then dockman bought them but declined to take 10 of the players. Anyway, as for this Chase card, I know of no way of knowing whether it is a Dockman or an E101, but I would bet that it is one or the other.

It definitely isn't a Nadja, the background style is wrong.

Going by the washed out skin tones I would say, after you peeled it off the cardboard it's glued to, you would have a E92 Croft's Cocoa.

I haven't owned a Croft's & Allen Chase so it could be that. Coloring is different from my Dockman.

C'mon Brian, know something we don't? What is it?

on ebay but passed because of the small border tear. I think it is an E92 Croft's Candy Croft's and Allen card which was printed on a promotional advertising piece of cardboard along with others and then cut, removed and trimmed.
That's what I think but it still nags me that the card was possibly originally described on ebay last time as an E101 proof, although I don't think it is.

I like the "1/4 inch crease that may have broken through the card." Last I heard it was called a tear.

Maybe because he started playing Pete Rose at first base, we don't understand how great a player he really was.

Or maybe he knew somebody...

Cobb played against 'em all and said Chase was the best defensive first baseman he ever played against and Bucky Weaver (plug for my guy) was the best defensive third baseman. Quite a statement for Weaver as he was a defensive liability when he first came up and only tedious hard work and constant instruction by Kid Gleason turned it around for him.
Selig won't take Buck back off the suspended for life, souble secret probation list he was unfairly and unjustly put on by Landis. Just another reason to hate Selig (as if any true fan needs another).

From what I've read, Chase revolutionized the way 1B was played. Just can't remember what it was that was so significant. Whether it was playing off the bag, first to play behind the runner, etc.

Most old-timers seem to agree that Chase was the best there was at 1B.

Agreed, contemperaries and contemperary literature said he was the superior first basemaman of the day. I don't profess to be a baseball historian (didn't even watch the movie 'Major League'), but, from what I understand, 1st Base was the most important fielding positing during the day.

Hopefully if I don't keep getting hammered in Mastro's auction, I'll be adding some more of his cards to the shrine.
Happy Birthday Bucky, we know you played your heart out and never took a dime!!!!!!

Hey, happy birthday, Buck!

(I copied page 4 from the disappeared thread--I can't get over how revolting the things Koos mentions that he thought would make him attractive are to me. It's like--we were different species.)

I sort of hope so.
