Default So sue me for outing these T206 auctions...

Posted By: T206Collector

...but what the h*ll is going on here? If the Needham went for $200-ish, I'd get it, but over $700?!

And over $300 for a slight miscut SGC 50 McGann card? Really?!

Not sure if this is the answer but that seller has quite a following of buyers.

I used to buy from the seller pretty much on a weekly basis - he is a great seller btw. However, the prices he has been obtaining have gone up and up and up in the last 6 months even for PSA 3 or 4's which is the level I collect. When combined with the pound slumping of late against the dollar I am simply priced out of these auctions...

It gets better. That exact same T206 Needham (same SGC serial number and everything) sold one month ago for $102.

Absolutely ridiculous.

WOW! I have a Needham in a 60 holder that I will sell for half of what this one sells for and it has a Sovereign back.
I have bought from Tom in the past-great seller, but this is crazy!

The same two bidders are driving up the prices on both cards. The third-highest bids on each card are $106/$107.

Sounds like a simple case of two bidders with more money than brains, both suffering from set registry fever.

I do like to watch what he sells. I tend to loose quite a few auctions to him at the last second. I have ended up a buck short on a couple pink and trophy Chase cards over the past 6 weeks or so.
Good looking auctions too.

Everyone likes to rag on ebay, and I understand why, but here is the one thing that can not be duplicated in any other venue: the crazy off the wall price. List enough items, and if a couple get these kinds of bids, it will pay for all the extra fees and aggravation.

That said, why bidders would be willing to pay many multiples of retail for a very common card of course makes no sense. Wait a week and the same card will be available for $100. Some things in the hobby can't be explained.

Barry - I'm not sure it's a numbers game - many of us have listed our fair share of vintage cards and never been the recipient of the "the crazy off the wall price."

I think if you get a couple of buyers with a lack of patience and a quality card that you do not see every week, you can get prices over current book or retail. But 5-7 times normal price makes you wonder what the heck is going on. More then likely, it will take a long time to recoup the price paid but it could be the buyer is going to bury the card in a collection for decades. You can pretty much count on the auction houses being fairly consistent on prices but the bay can give you a few head scratchers as well as some deals if you get lucky.

I know Matt, but I'm trying to come up with an explanation of why two bidders are each willing to overpay, and that's the best I can come up with. It really doesn't make sense.

I could understand if it were a rare card or a low pop, and the bidders decided it's now or never. But this card is regularly available.

Edited to remove some specific information since the sale is still going on.

I don't think the buyer of that Needham will be able to recoup the price he paid until 2114.

The seller won a PSA6 with an old mill back a couple weeks ago(an upgrade I'm assuming)for slightly over 200.

Uh Barry...have you checked out some of the final "prices" that certain auction houses get for their cards?

these types of auction results help push prices higher and higher...

of course, I say this, because I already own a Needham, albeit a 4, but still...

Sometimes auctions like these turn people away. I've stopped collecting "many" of my favorite cards when I have sincere doubts about the auctions going on. I've bought from this user, but these two auctions are disturbing. People like to explain someone is really needing it and this or that - really? That much? I am sorry but I have my doubts.

As long as the auction is paid for I see nothing wrong. What would the purpose be of trying to prop up the Needham and McGann market? If I need something for a set I always overpay for it as I am an impatient person.
As a person with adult attention deficit disorder it costs me more than the average collector.. I tend to focus on getting the card I need at whatever cost because I am so easily sidetracked by other cards

The McCann is explainable because some collectors pay "stupid" prices for cards with weird cuts. More power to them. The price on the Needham is insane.

I have only had positive experiences with this seller. He even gave me a heads up very recently on a fraudulent auction I won. Ebay closed it down completely, after I won it, and I was saved from a big problem. I have also bought from the seller with no problem. I have been in contact with him and the auctions you see are some of his regular customers and some might not read price guides. Also, more and more, folks are buying the card and not the holder. Personally, I think these auctions are on the up and up......There's my 1/2 cent.....also, I never have a problem with folks questioning things like this on the board, per the board rules. Take care and have a happy Labor Day....

I purchased this Griffith Portrait from this seller a few weeks ago but paid a little more than the typical 3. I tried to snipe a Walsh he had for sale yesterday but it went higher than what others have gone for of late.

His cards are pretty good quality for the grade. Not that those others didn't go way beyond reason... but just for comparison I'll post a picture of another 3 PSA... Tell me which one you'd pay more for...

Mine:
