Default Writing and stamps on Old Judge backs.

Hi, this is the first post of a “long time observer.” Having the National almost in my back yard inspired me to dig out my small collection (24) of Old Judge cards which I had acquired during the late 1980's. Some of the backs have been written on or stamped. I am hoping someone may recognize the handwriting or may have information on “ANDREW BRADLEY?” Thank you.

Oops about the ditital stamp on McPhee. I got that card before he became a HOFer.

First off let me say that having a McPhee and a Gus Schmelz out of only 24 Old Judges is doing pretty darn good!

I don't recognize the writing and have nothing to add to who Andrew Bradley was, but I thought I would show my favorite OJ "back-stamp" that I have ever seen. It appears someone was using them to advertise their "Cigar Shop" post distribution by Goodwin, kinda neat go along item.

Welcome - great cards!

It's interesting - the pen notations (such as on McPhee and others) appear to have been done many years after the fact.

I wonder - when was it acceptable to write on cards? I mean by collectors, and not just kids. I have seen many instances where the ACC designation of E98, etc., is written on the cards, so apparently it was OK among collectors to write on them at least into the 1930s. I wonder when this stopped becoming a normal practice?

A couple of interesting (to me at least) ones from the T206 set:

Anyone seen this back stamping before?

The stamp is Burdick's; that "B" appears in albums in the Met that I saw when I visited there.

Default N172 Werrick

Whoever wrote this note about Werrick had great penmanship! Has anyone seen other cards with this kind of printing?

Great looking cards. I have a number of different stamps but nothing as cool as Rhett's advertising. Thanks to all for sharing.

I have some cards I purchased long ago, that the dealer wrote the price on the back of the card in pencil. Not too smart, but it used to happen in the early 1970's and 80'. So writing on the card backs continued for some time, even by people who should have known better.

Bruce-Great card! In your scan you can see some of the "Paul" in St Paul in the lower right portion of the image

It's (the Werrrick card) very hard to read, even with a loupe. The "W" in Werrick and the "Paul" in St. Paul are the easiest to make out. The example in The Old Judge book exhibits a bit more contrast than my example and is a little bit easier to make out. The writing on the back certainly seems more recent than any other writing I've seen on N172s.

I used to own this SGC 20 Ed Delahanty that had "WFS" written on the back: http://robertedwardauctions.com/auction/2009/39.html I recall someone in the chat room having a N172 with the same initials on it so there must be a few of them out there.

Doug, this one obviously came from the same original collection as yor Delehanty, and at one point I had a few others that had the same initials on back...

Whoever "WFS" is must have had quite a few cards. Back when I had that Delahanty I started a thread asking if anyone had any idea who that was, but it didn't go anywhere. Maybe somebody knows more now?
