Default 1928 Hornsby Exhibits - help

Posted By: steve

Last night closed on ebay - two PSA labeled 1928 Exhibits Hornsby PSA 5. ebay items 280180264413 and 370002030936.

PSA pops say only one card in PSA 5, not two. The two cards closed last night have different pictures (batting pose and fielding pose).

They cannot both be 1928 Exhibits, yes/no ? Both sellers did not know whats up - just assumed PSA is right.

I assume PSA is wrong with one of them not being a 1928, but rather some other similar era year.

I was going for both cards, won one. Any help to identify PSA label as right/wrong on one of the cards, correct years. Thanks, Steve.

Lot 280180264413 is a PC-back exhibit (1925-1931). Old Cardboard has an example in its gallery section on the set.

Looking at Old Cardboard, it shows:

The Hornsby, fielding, as a 1928 card, commons value $17.
The Hornsby, batting, as a 1925-31 card, commons value $27.

I then assume the batting pose I picked up is mislabeled by PSA as a 1928, should be labeled 1925-31. Can I get PSA to correct their mistake?

Also note - O.Cardboard shows in the 1925-31 set a Babe Ruth, pose - same card - see scan of my same Ruth card labeled by PSA 1926-29. O.Cardboard does not list a set with the year designation 1926-29. Who is right/wrong on this Ruth card?

1920's Exhibits, oh, so confusing. Steve.

The Standard Cat. checklists this card under 1926-29, listing Ruth (pose).

The 1925-31 date is brand new, through research the date was widened on the PC-Back Exhibits (used to be 1926-29). The catalogs will/should eventually catch up and update their info.

There are a few names the set(s) go by. Lipset among others breaks the 1925-31 set down even farther. They call them "Set 81", "Set 82", "Set 83", etc. But I still cant tell for sure which subset some of the cards are from.

Example of Lipset's http://www.oldjudge.com/auction/180/

Can someone with some time show and example of each subset and explain what the differences are?

Steve, the Ruth "pose" Exhibit you have above is from "Set 83"
