I'm assuming that staples are cards that are abundant and depict many players.

N172
T206
T200
M101-x
CJs (either year)
Goudey (1933)
Playball (1940)
Topps (1952)
Topps (1957)

I'd include Zeenuts if minor league cards are a consideration.

As I define a baseball card, nothing after the 19th century qualifies. (Sorry Leon, you're selling the wrong century.) Also, with items 17 and 18, I intend to get them slabbed in order to qualify them as baseball cards.

EDITED to express my sympathies to Leon.

EDITED A SECOND TIME to include numero uno, Peck and Snyders. Sometimes the most obvious omissions are right under your nose.

It's ok...I am sure I will keep a few for old time memories (probably one you used to own).....it's only cardboard and yes it sucks selling stuff you love......But when you see something like the video I posted yesterday it puts what is important in perspective....Admitting I have an addiction was the first step ....take care....can't wait for the National when we can get together again.......

I'm surprised how much love post-war cards are getting from everybody. I'm particularly impressed with how many pre-war collectors mentioned 1956 and 1957 Topps cards, which I have always been a big fan of. Both sets scored just as high as the 1953 Bowman color set. It's also surprising to see Kellogg's, Donruss and Upper Deck cards on the list ...

1) T206
2) T3
3) Obaks
4) 1933 Goudey
5) 1934-36 Diamond Stars
6) Exhibits
7) Play Ball (1939-41)

9) 1953 Bowman (color)
10) 1956 Topps
11) 1957 Topps

Has to be able to be widely collected. Has to be eye appealing asthetically. Has to be highly desireable. Not the best, your favorite, most rare, etc.

First tier:
T206
1914/15 Cracker Jacks
1933 Goudey
1941 Playball
1948 Leaf
1952 Topps

Second tier:
T205
1934 Goudey
1953 Topps

Stop at top 9.
steve

ps. Single most coolest card = 1949 Bowman Satchell Paige

The way I read the question :

"what are the (18) "staples" of the hobby."

is the way I responded. I don't own any of the post war cards I picked but to not include 1952 Topps in the staples of the hobby?

edited to add a word I left out

(18) diffent issues, that define "Baseball Cards" what would they be, i.e. 1909-11 T206, 1952 Topps, etc. What I am looking for is the majority opinion on what are the (18) "staples" of the hobby. I am not strictly looking vintage here, I am looking for all years included. Please list them in order of year and thanks to all whom will take the time to compile a list. I have a project up my sleeve and want to pick your brains before I make my final list.

Not sure if these are 'staples', but they are my favorite sets because of the design of the cards and the players who appear in them. I might pick more sets from pre-WWI if I was more familiar with them. I would definitely not pick anything issued after 1969. In chronological order, they are:

T206 White Border
T3 Turkey Red
1914 Cracker Jack
1915 Cracker Jack
1933 Goudey
1934 Goudey
1934-36 Diamond Stars
1951 Bowman
1952 Bowman
1952 Topps
1953 Bowman Color
1953 Topps
1956 Topps
1963 Topps
1965 Topps
1966 Topps
1967 Topps
1969 Topps
